Default 400rwhp - Smog legal?

Hi guys

I wonder if it's possible to reach 400rwhp (NA) while still be smog legal.
Vehicle is a 2001 Camaro Z28 A4.

I live in Switzerland and we have about the same laws regarding smog legality as california. Which means I have to keep the stock exhaust manifolds and cats (maybe switch to highflow cats). But I can change other parts like Heads and Cam, as long as I'm able to pass the sniffer test. Which extremely narrows the cam choice I think.

Do you think it's possible to reach 400rwhp with all those limits? Or what can be expected?

Yes it can be done. I am making 407 rwhp/391 rwhp through stock exhaust manifolds/Random Tech high flow cats/stock catback in a LS6 CTS-V. The CTS-V has more parasitic driveline loss than others, so I believe somewhat better results are possible. This upgrade path however, is more expensive than setups that use long-tube headers. My setup and cam was spec'd by Patrick G, of this forum. I would suggest you contact him.

also consider including some AFR heads if your budget allows.

I thought of at least some ported LS6 (243) heads. It seems that I have to do a lot of reading about the different heads.

Search around on here for the Tick Performance Poluter cam. I do belive that cam was designed to keep cats and still make the 400rwhp but I could be wrong.

"Polluter cam" doesn't sound very sniffer friendly... LOL

lol no that huge cam will not pass smog here in CA. the general rule of thumb is no more than -4* of overlap with the cam. but since u r gonna keep stock exhaust manifolds i would say go with something like the cheater v3 cam. or have one cut for ur car. but it is possible to hit 400rwhp and still have lots of low end torque without longtubes. its just gonna take more planning with ur combo.

It might be a little difficult because you have an A4, but my 218/230 116(-8* overlap)cam made 426rwhp through ported stock heads, stock MAF and intake, longtubes(of course they contributed) and a stock cat back. The tuning is going to be the key. Feel free to contact us at, if you'd like to discuss options. Thanks, Chris

With an automatic, you will need a 219/230 117LSA type cam or similar (something like the Lingenfelter GT2-3 or the CheaTR v.3), some high flowing heads like ported 243s, ported 5.3L heads (TSP Stg 2.5), or AFR 205s, and a FAST 78/90/92 intake manifold (to be comfortably above 400rwhp). I live in CA and am going with a custom 218/230 115+3 cam for my build (-6* overlap) and some ported+polished 241 heads through stock 01-02 exhaust manifolds/cats, and a Bassani 2.5" true dual catback... Hope it passes the sniffer! From what I've read, it should.

I actually have a setup going together with AFR 205s that I will see if it turns out to be smog friendly. Through an auto too. Just want to see what she makes.

Thank you all for your reply. So it sounds like it's quite possible. That was what I was hoping for.

When I've finished this project I will post my Dyno Numbers and tell you if I passed the sniffer test.
