Default Autometer water gauge for a 98'

I did a search and found that on 98' only cars you can tap into the 3rd wire on the stock sender and use that.
But haven't really seen a straight forward answer on which wire that is (color) and anyone that has actually tried this on a 98'
I'm guessing the 99-newer has the 2 prong sender and this can't be done because it will throw codes or something?

Thanks for any info
Mark

I just found the adapter and plugged it directly into the head (behind the #8) and didn't even touch the stock stuff.
