Default US stall converters

Hey, from the land of OZ and looking at getting a stall and a few other goodies from the US while our dollar is good.

The car in its current state is a VY commodore LS1 4l60e with PAC 1218s, 3.91 diff, full exhaust, OTR and a tune, runs 13.1 @ 108mph with a 2.2 60'.

Currently looking at a comp cam 228º/232º .588/.595 112+2, now im thinking of a stall around 4200-4500. Now i was looking at a Circle D 5c, which was going to cost me 1000 USD to my door, but the guys im buying my others bits from sells the vigilante converters, which i have'nt heard to much about, but going that option is saving me about 300usd.

The car will only ever get used every 3rd week due to working away, its going to be used for street/track.

So what do you guys reakon?

The Vig's were REALLY HOT around 2004-2006(7). Then Yank came on the scene and BLEW Vig away.

Now Yank is slipping in customer service and "supposedly" machining.

So Circle D is the big dawg now. I personally just purchased the 5C 4000-4200 Converter from Circle D. It shipped today

Certain parts are your "core" and should not be cheaped out. I Personally believe the Converter, the heads/cam and the rear should not be overlooked and went with what was cheap.

The Precision Industries Vigilante Converter you hardly ever hear anything about them anymore. And when THAT happens, there is USUALLY a reason. Just stay away from Vig'

i was still leaning towards the Circle D, was looking at it due to price, converters were only 50bux different, it was the extra shipping that was doing it.

There are a few companies over here selling circle D, but their prices, looking at an extra 400, so yeah, ill buy from the US thanks.

So a 5c will match well with that cam and gears?

This post sounds like it belongs on a reality TV show. There is absolutely no useful info in it. If you'd care to back up any of the statements with proof, I'd be glad to listen. In particular the crack about Yanks machining, I found that especially funny and dumb at the same time.

OP, Vigilante has a solid reputation, as does Yank. And Circle D does as well from what I've heard. I think all 3 of these companies make a solid product. I will say that a 4200-4500 converter may be a bit much for that cam. I have a very similar cam with a 4k and its about as perfect as you can get for a street/strip combo. I honestly don't think there would be much to gain by going up in stall speed much above about 4k.

Just because Vig TQ's may not be EnVogue right now dose not mean somthing is wrong with them. Vig, Yank and C-D all make quality TQ but none are without issues. Just do your research and buy what meets your needs. I shopped warr. and features Vig was the best for me, had mine for 6 mo. now with NO! issues

If you wanna get off fast than Yank it haha. I have been hearing really good things about Circle D also though. I wouldn't hesitate to go with either.

well, with the 2.2 60 foot times, pretty much gaining nothing from the diff swap at the track, getting off quicker and making me happy with the time is important this time round. i should add, ive never owned a stalled car before, driven a few, and they have all been fun, but living with it is a little different

I personally chose a Yank SS4k and talked to Dave about a half an hour before I made the purchase. That was before Circle D was big around here. I wouldnt hesitate to give them my business either....but, until I have a legitimate complaint with Yank, I will be staying with them.

We would love to build you a converter. Shipping to Australia is easy, we have some great rates with UPS.

Cam & stall choice are a HUGE mismatch. Either drop the stall speed or get a bigger cam.

When thinking 4k+ stalls think high 23x or 24x duration cams. There is no sense in stalling the engine up PAST a cams power band or even too far into it to start. A 228 is a low speed torque cam that builds from 3k-6k. If you want to jump in to the 4s or even mid 4s in the revs then do it with a cam that builds FROM 4k-7k+.

Yank was chosen as the only officially licensed GM Performance Parts converter and will be sold thru all GM dealerships world wide very soon.
So if you can wait a bit you can order from your local dealer

Are you serious? Do you have any experience actually driving a car with the mods he is talking about? I had a 3200 converter with a TR224 and that cam wanted MORE stall. Saying it needs less is just dumb. I then upped it to a 4k and it was an awesome combo, the car flashed the converter to the meat of the cam's powerband. It pulled very strong throughout the midrange. I then decided that the tr224 cam just doesn't have enough top end for my taste as it falls kinda flat in the upper 5ks. So I chose a cam similar to the OPs, a Cam Motion 228/232. Still running the 4k and its a badass combo. This cam doesnt fall on its face, it pulls hard to redline (which is conservative in my car, 6200)

A bigger cam would still go faster and be more correct for the combo regardless of how well your pint sized slugger does.

Find me the small cams in the stock bottom end record lists.

Nobody said it wouldnt work. It will just work better with an appropriate cam. Nobody said anything about driveability wants or anything else, so its assumed, that all that matters here is 1/4 performance. Especially considering OPs mods like 3.91 gears in an A4.

You say his cam/converter choice is a huge mismatch, I say it's a minor mismatch, we can settle at that

So a 3600 would probably be about perfect for him...
