Default is a 228r cam right for me? or no cam at all?

i ask this because my car has 175k miles on her. i take real good care of it and i dont beat on hardly ever. i bought it with a 142k miles on it and has ran like a top. i would like to put a cam in it, but i dont want to blow my bottom end. i didnt know if this would be too much cam or if i could even get away with running a cam at my mileage.

i have a had my car almost three years and has never seen the track, but i do like to get on it from time to time. ( whats the use of having it if not)

i have the supporting mods other than an ls6 intake witch i will be picking up soon.

my car is a 99z m6
ls1 motorsports lid
pacesetters longtubes
slp offroad y pipe
magnaflow catback
ls7 clutch

i dont care anything about raising the stock rev limiter or changing out the 3:42 gears

you guys let me know what you think, thanks

i bought my car at 150K and drove it with bolts till 165k, and then put the 228r in her. i do have 4.10s tho, but i LOVE this cam good all around power and pulls to 6300 rpms with my shitty stock 806 heads. you will have to tune it tho. and my fuel mileage didn't take a big hit either.

Mileage means nothing.. I just spun a bearing with 90k miles and a 228. My old ms4 car has over 120k on it and still running strong as ever.

I would say stick with a cam around the size of a 224/224 112lsa, since you're not want change you power band much.
EPS make some really good grinds in/around the low 220 range.

You might be really happy with a 228R, but I think you'd be happier with something smaller.

IMO, talk to some of the site sponsors, and get an idea what they would recommend and do a lot more research. The more you know the better decision you'll make.

Yea I was looking at the 224 cams for the longest, I just dont want the should have gone bigger syndrome. Seems everyone is getting good results with this cam without moving the power band too far up in the rpms. Seems almost like having a 224 cam as far as driveability and power under the curve, but with just a bit more power.

Someone please correct me if im wrong.

I don't see any problems putting a cam in a motor with high mileage you just need to make sure you replace your valvetrain parts. I would recommend looking into replacing your lifters at the same time that you do the cam because there is a good chance lifters that old would break shortly after a cam swap. I would also make sure you get a new timing chain as well as an oil pump. These two parts aren't typically required but would be a good idea because of the mileage on the car.

The 228R is a great cam if you are looking for something you can drive everyday. You will notice a definite pick up in power while not losing much driveability once tuned.

Thanks john for the input. Makes me feel a lot better about it. I was definetely going to change out the valvetrain for that reason. Good info

I got my 228R in the motor last week end. I hope to be able to get everything else bolted back on this week end and fire it up. I think my Z06 is going to love it.

If your not willing to raise your rev limiter to match the new power curve don't waste your time getting a cam that size IMO.

As far as installing a cam with higher miles, I would. But like already mentioned, make sure to address your timing chain, oil pump, and lifters for reliability.

I didnt think you really had to spin that cam to the moon to make good power? I can live without 5-6 hp if thats all it would be worth to spin the motor another 3-4 hundred rpms, or would there be a lot more left on the table?

just be ready if the motor lets loose, if you want the power quick and lower in the rpms i would suggest a 224/224 on 110+4 that cam will make power very soon and you wont have to rev it much higher then stock.

What kind of powerband would that 224 be like? I know it would have a nice lope which I would like.
