Default Brake pedal stiffness

So guy i went up into the mountains this past weekend for a bit of snow boarding and noticed something odd with my brake pedal. Since i was doing alot of highway driving late at night the brakes didnt need to be used often but when i had to use them they were as hard a rock. almost like pushing down on a pedal with a cinder block underneath. after using it for a few presses the pedal would be a bit better but not by much.

the change in temp was prob about 30 degrees or so ( going from low 30's to about low single digits). the next morning once it got warmer ( in the 20's) the pedal was fine. I also went over a decent amount of elevation changes.

here is the route i took and you can find the elevation changes as you scroll from page to page.

i was thinking maybe i was having a build up of ice or something on the rotor but that shouldnt really happen on modern vehicles. any ideas, the brakes always feel fine once the temp is in the 20's, in the 0-3 degree range they just have no feel.

My CTS-V does this in the rain when I'm driving on the highway.

This is true with mine as well. But it only happens the very first time I hit the brakes after it has been sitting for a while. After that it softens up to normal feel.

Couple things. One, moisture on the rotors and pads are going to cause that feeling until the friction surfaces are dry. Second, long periods of driving where the brakes aren't used much are going to scrub off the boundary layer of pad material applied to the rotors, again affecting braking feel and performance.
