Changing springs w/ Heads off engine?
What have others done in this instance, I'm sure it is fairly common. I have the head sitting on a workbench, and as I tighten the spring compressor the valve of course moves with it, and if i keep going it will lift the head off the table. Naturally the solution would be to just grab a big clamp, but I am worried about snapping a valve because the force exerted by the table on the valve is at an angle.
As per the instructions w/ the valve compressor (Tim's tool) I used an appropriate socket and tapped lightly with a hammer to loosen the locks, no noticeable effect. The motor is at ~100k and this is the first time I believe the valve covers have even been off so they may just be stuck on there, in that case what should I try?

Hello , what I do is put a piece of carpet or pad on the ground and then a rubber bushing that is about the diameter of an intake valve under the head of the calve being removed and while I'm compressing the spring I put some of my body weight on the cyl head . Some a little tougher than others , but they all comply . Good luck

I had this exact same issue and was using tim's tool as well.
What I suggest (which worked great for me) is compress the spring with the tool to get the valve just barely off the valve seat and set the head on its side and lightly tap the valve face with a rubber mallet, it might take a few taps since you are doing it lightly but it will free it from the locks. Worked great and didn't damage anything!

You pay a deposit and get 100% refund when you return it.
I have "borrowed" theirs so many times I ended up not returning it.
My rule is if I had to borrow it 3 times, I need it.
