Default Attention VATS experts!

Ok so I need someone who knows there stuff when it comes to VATS.

My brother has a 1992 Oldsmobile 88 as a daily and today it doesn't want to start. The security light is flashing so I know it is the VATS system acting up. So far we have had another key made and it still doesn't start. the reading of both keys are as follows:

original key-6.02 ohms
new key-6.06 ohms

From what I have read GM used 15 different resistances and the closest ones to these keys is 6.04. So here is the problem...neither key will start the vehicle. Our options are to either replace the cylinder and get re-keyed or just bypass it. If I bypass it will it start the vehicle? Only reason I question it is because even the new key didn't work and basically it should be right around the correct resistance. Wouldn't putting resistors for the same resistance be the same thing? I'm just worried it is a bigger problem like BCM or something.

Try the bypass, more then likely one of the wires that run up to cylinder snapped.

Thats the only way I could see the bypass working in my situation because both keys read correctly. Anyway I'm just kind of worried about doing it and it not working for sure if I need to splice the wires back together.

Try looking at the bottom of the steering column should be a connector for the VATS.

any time you try to start the car and there's a problem you have to wait 2 or 3 minutes before trying again because ther's a timer in the system. 9 times out of 10 the ignition lock cylinder goes bad. Repairing the wires up to it in the column is not recommended because it probably will add resistance to the circuit.

i would think you could just put the 2 wires together. Then just add a 6.04 resistor resistor. That will fix it, biggest problem will be getting to these wires lol.

Get a 50 htz box off ebay, ground the starter relay. Do it the right way so you dont have problems in the future.
