Truck fuel pump/sump question

Truck fuel pump/sump question
Does anyone know how the truck fuel pump/sump works?
The pump has 2 inlets with a pickup sock inside and one outside the sump.
There's a one way valve in the sump housing to keep fuel in there. But is there some kind of check valve to pevent the pump from sucking air from outside the sump, while picking up fuel from the sumps internal pickup?
Btw, I'm asking because my 442 fuel tank is wide and flat and I dont think I can get away without having some kind of sump in the tank.

Gary, what you described sounds just like an F-Body pump - or honestly most any mid 90's up fuel injected GM car I've worked on... The F-Body part may be a bit shorter, but I didn't measure mine when I had it apart so I can't give you dimensions. Another one to check would be a 98 / 99 Monte Carlo or Grand Prix.
The design is pretty ingenious in that it is basically a drop in sump which saves a lot of complexity in the manufacturing process I'm sure. Cool for us because we can retrofit it to something else.

Yep pretty much. FWIW the shortest ones I have found so far are the mid 90`s cadillac`s (I forget how tall though and the one I had on the shelf has been completely cut down and reworked so I can`t measure it) and I just found out the 2002-2004ish? flex fuel tahoe was pretty short too, it will compress to less than 8".
