Default Do I have a short, dead battery, or bad alternator?

Hey guys,

I have a 2002 Z28 it was throwing P0332, knock sensor code, and then my gauges stopped working specifically, gas, tach, and temp and a bunch of lights came on "service vehicle, abs inop, check gauges, brake light." When I plugged in my OBD2 scanner the lights went off and my gauges started to work again. Well, my car sat overnight and now it doesnt start. I jumped the battery and the car started up. When I shut it off it doesnt run again. Is that an alternator problem or battery. Or is there clearly a short somewhere?

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Evan

I'm thinking a knock sensor has a short in it, or could it be a bad knock sensor? Are they expensive?

A quick way to rule out alt or batter would be to go get it tested. My mony is on battery..

Do the gauges go crazy after you jump it and pet it run?

Yeah after I jump the car, turn it off, and try to start it again the tach and speedo gauges go up and down...what would that indicate?

So the knock sensor couldn't be creating short?

Dead battery or the sort..

After u jump it and it goes crazy for a second does it start acting normal or continue gauge bouncing every knce in a while?

I would rule out battery and alt before i started trying to track down a short somewhere.

Its the battery or battery connection. The gauges sweeping indicates the battery is severely discharged.

Okay that's a relief but how can I remedy the knock sensor code? My car is overdue for an oil change could that be the cause or low octane gas?

Alot of people, but not all, think higher octane means better/faster burning, when thats not the case at all. Lower octane fuel ignites quicker then high octane. If your car calls for 93 use 93. That could be the problem with your KNOCK sensor, thats exactly what is senses. Change your oil.

My car was doing the same thing because of the battery.

I also have the security alarm going off all the time. Parked it and Ill deal with it in the spring.

a knock sensor would probly be about 60-80 dollars a piece. i'd try using the correct octane before pumping extra money into it. do you need to know where the knock sensors are?

Knock sensors are $40 apiece at the auto parts store.

I got the new battery car starts up but a bunch of lights come on including the service vehicle, brake, abs inop light, the tach stops working, gas gauge stops working and temp gauge stops working. When I plug in my obd2 scanner the lights go away and the gauges start to work...what does that indicate?

When I test the miniature fuses in the engine bay they don't show that they're getting power. Shouldn't the test light, light up?

EXACT same thing happened to me. Turned out to be my battery terminals (side posts) were stripped resulting loose/wobbly connections. I changed to a top post (clamp style) battery and did some rewiring to make it applicable. Oddly enough I threw the P0332 code too. Found that problem to be melted knock sensor wire (ls2 block). I Spliced the wires and replaced the knock sensor too. No problems since. Issues with my car seem to come in waves.
