Default does the ECM need a start signal?

tracing the wiring diagram from alldata for my 04 GTO conversion it shows the ground side of the coil for the starter relay going to the PIM. Not sure what the PIM is, but was wondering if I could just ground that wire, which would complete the ciruit and engage the relay with the power from the ign switch.

I don't know if the PCM needs to set a certain ignition or injector pulse when turning over but not running.

I guess another way to ask is can I just set up a starter circuit and not involve the PCM?

Yes the PCM will know the engine is running by the cam and crank sensors. That's when the PCM knows to fire off the injectors and coils. So yes you can just wire the starter up straight. 1 signal wire and 1 power wire right off the battery.
