Default RPM’s won’t drop to idle when put into neutral and driving

My car is pretty much stock besides a full exhaust and a mail order tune. My setting idle RPM is about 850. I was going down the highway at 60mph and put the car into neutral going down a big hill. My RPM’s fell and stayed around 1,200. Then I went 100mph in 5th gear and put it in neutral and my RPM’s hung around 2,000. Is this normal? I just noticed it today for some reason but I always though in the past when I put it in neutral the RPM’s would fall to my idle. Is something going on here or is it all in my head? Thanks.

Are you still moving (MPH > 5) when doing this? The ECM idle code doesn't kick in unless you're almost standing still.

Yes, I am still moving, I was still going 60mph and 100mph when I put it in neutral. I usually never put it in neutral going down a hill but I use to frequently do that in my automatic V6 Firebird. Maybe that’s why I’m thinking it should drop lower because it did on that car. If what you are saying is correct then I guess there isn’t a problem here.

Yup, same thing here. I'd like to think it's normal.

Its normal.

When the PCM sees that the vehicle is moving at speed, it doesn't let the engine idle until the car is almost stopped.

I believe the reasoning behind this is so that if the driver selects a lower gear and lets the clutch out abruptly, there is less chance of the engine causing rear wheel lockup and possibly a loss of control.

Here is an update, very unusual too.

So I was going 60mph today down a hill and decided to put it in neutral again. My RPM's dropped to their idle at about 900rpm. Just last week when I did this my RPS's would stay around 1,400. I was trying to think what was different between last week and this week. Today was a warmer day and I didn't have my heat on. So I turned my heat on to the foot/head setting and fan speed at 3. What do you know...my RPM's suddenly jumped from 900 to 1,400 while I was still going 60 in neutral. I'm guessing the car bumps the RPM's up to handle the heat/fan being on.
