i've been racing the car for almost 2 years now and i've been running the number 4 ignition timing chip and the car has been running good. i was wondering if i should start changing chips to try and get little better E/T out of the car. should i try and set my own timing? should i try different chips?

What chips r u guys using?

Thanks
Anthony

Do your own timing curves to get the most out of the setup

Man, i went from the most aggressive chip, to my own tune, all i can say is it was night and day, a whole different car.

Should we say more?

We have a thread in here on recommended curves, or what we are each running anyway.

I just bought a 6010 box used. Do i need a chip for this box to operate? I plan to program my own curve.

If you are going to use the software to make your own timing curve, you don't need the pills

If I remember correctly, the box will default to the curve that is produced by the #3 pill if you don't set a curve yourself or if you don't insert a timing pill. If you didn't get any paper work with the box you can go to MSD's web site and download the instructions which also include the specs for all the timing pills.

If you are running a map sensor and using one of the chips, does the msd box see the map sensor?

I think this is correct. Also if you set your own curve then put a pill in it, it reads the pill

The short answer is yes. If you have the MAP hooked up it will produce the vacuum advance curve that is specific to that # pill. Although most of the pills use a similar curve, there are slight differences. Again... the instructions show the advance curves and the individual vacuum curves for each number pill. The trick for most people is trying to convert MSD's PSIA numbers to the more familiar inches of vacuum. If you do a search, there is a coversion chart on here somewhere.
