Default Ls6 Block Casting - What's This For?

Hey guys. Can anyone tell me what the square casting blocks are on the side of the block just below the head. One has a threaded hole on the left front side of motor. What is it for? Can these be removed? They look like square casting blocks from when the block was cast.

Thanks...Kevin

On an f body, the one with the threaded hole is used for the rear alt bolt. The other 3 or whatever aren't used for anything I don't believe.

Not 100% sure, but my guess would be that they are locating registers for the tool fixtures that GM used to machine the block.
