HI,
GEARS ARE GOOD FOR .2-.3 PLUS/MINUS. STALL IS WORTH .3-.6 +/- BUT OVERALL THE BEST ET GAIN. TIRES/GEARS INCREASE THE DRAG FACTOR ON THE DYNO THERFORE NUMBERS CHANGE +/-.---------- IT IS NOT THE HP/TQ YOU HAVE ---------IT'S EVERYTHING WORKING TOGETHER THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE."IT'S NOT ABOUT HP/TQ BUT HOW FAST YOU CAN GET THERE (FINISH LINE) ".
FOR THOSE WHO RACE. TOTAL SUSPENSION MODS WORK BEST FOR MODIFIED AND STOCK VEHICLES........BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT AND HAVE A BLESSED WEEKEND...........CAPTAIN JIM

Gears arent a powermod. They keep you in your powerband/help you get there quicker

thats what I did. Picked up a set of 3.42 gears out of a manual car with less than 20k miles on them from an 02 camaro. Cant beat it for $40 shipped. Plus GM gears wont make any whining noise like so many aftermarket gears do.

Flame suit on

Some S10s came with 3.73s in them. OEM 4.10s (Also S10s) and 4.30s (Some Izuzus) are out there. Ebay has them sometimes, and some shops also know where to get them. I believe SLP sells them new as well (AAM brand)

Let's not forget that he has a 2 series carrier- either it's replace it with a 3 series, get 2 series 'thick' gears, or just grab a whole used 3.42 rear. This is what I'm looking for on my current 94 project with the 2.73 GU2 option.

3.42s should have me crossing the traps at about 126MPH at 6000RPM near the top of 3rd in an A4. 3.73s would have me at the same place at about 117MPH. I'd have to push it to 6400RPM to hit the same trap speed on 3.73s. I'll be running a mid-220s/low-230s cam with around .565 lift with most of the meat of the curve around 5500-6200RPM, though probably peaking at 6400. And 3600 stall... this is 1/4 mi. thinking. 1/8 will be a lot different...

That being said, my vote is to find a whole 3.42 rear, which will both get rid of the 2-series carrier and make further gear swaps possible if desired. And/ or spend the coin on a real rear end down the road.

If they're not set up properly, it doesn't matter who made them, they will whine.

Yeah, I understand that. But some brands of gears, even when properly set up, still whine some. It's been posted and talked about a billion times. Oem GM gears, when set up correctly, are silent-most aftermarket gears aren't.

Get new gears-you have no way of knowing how the old ones were set up-then they will howl even if they are OEM. I learned the hard way

Gears were the very first mod I did to my car, before literally everything.
Ran a 14.0 stock, then ran a 13.7 with the gears, everything else constant. That was 0.3 I gained going from a 3.23 to a 4.10 ratio.

You won't see an increase in torque or hp for doing gears, since you engine is remaining the same. Gears are about physics, leverage basically-- makes it easier for your motor to do work without increasing your motors power.

Haven't had experience with GM 4.10's or 3.73's, but I can tell you of the 3 brands I've had which were all set up properly that Richmond was the noisiest, almost annoying at times, Strange Engineering about as quiet as stock, and Motive was more in the middle.
