General LSX Automobile Discussion - what did i break (pic included!)

I was pulling the intake off tonight and broke a sensor/solenoid of some kind. It sits directly behind the intake manifold towards the drivers side. It has a single pin wire connector coming to it. It fell behind the engine block but didnt hit the floor. Its probably chilling on my bell housing right now.

You can see the rest of it in the picture where it screws into the block. Any idea what this thing is?

Thats the oil pressure sensor. Everyone breaks there 1st one. You will need a special socket to get the new one on it cost me $25 for a new one at a local auto part store

That would be a broken Oil Pressure Sending Unit (OPSU).

I don't have any experience with installing one, but its a pretty common mishap when removing the intake from one of these cars. (Somehow I managed not to break mine when I installed my LS6 Intake.) I do know you'll definitely wanna replace it before reinstalling your Intake. It's supposed to be nearly impossible to get to with the Intake in place.

Piece of cake to put another one in. Also like stated above, you need a special socket to put another one in. Just go to pepboys and ask for an oil pressure sending unit socket.

The size OPSU socket you need is 1 1/16". Are you doing the LS6 valley upgrade, changing knock sensors, or??

no biggie , i was guilty of breaking mine too the first time lol

easy fix , like everyone said.

autozone has the thinwall socket for this, not sure if its needed on fbody but it is for trucks and suv's just thought i would throw that out there

Thanks for the responses. I'm a little less worried about it knowing its a common error.

They are pretty common to fail anyways, and cheap if I remember right. So its probably a good thing to replace it while you have the manifold off anyways.

im thinking it was around 40 bucks...i mean its a 8-12 yr old plastic sensor its going to be weak from all the engine heat and age

Yup! Broke mine too. I tried to save money and NOT get the socket. When I put everything back together, the OPSU would project oil out at around 3k RPM. Lol. After that, I bought the socket and, with the manifold still on, I slipped my hand back there, popped the wire off, slipped the socket on, slipped the wrench on, and got it tight. It's actually fairly easy to get to with everything assembled... Well, for an f-body ;)

what socket? lol i think i used a deep 25mm

LMAO me too! I fortunately have never briken one but that is becasue the first intake I pulled I had experienced friends with me that had all broken theres. LOL

i did the same. no one had one in stock and needed the car and put it back together. somehow, you can get back there. haha :bang:

I had a feeling it would be the OPSU when I opened this. :lol: I didn't even know there was a socket for this, we got my new one in perfect and it's been reading fine for months.

I have a backup one on standby just for this very reason..dont see it happening in the Monte Carlo SS tho..pleeenty of room to get to everything. :)

Today me and my dad started changing my knock sensors. Knowing about the location of the OPSU and knowing it usually gets hung up and broken, we still broke it! Good thing i already had a new one.
