ok im gonna try and do it reallyyyy simple...........
a converter is basically a fluid coupling between the transmission and the engine......
picture two fans on a table....one attached to the engine and one to the transmission and they are facing each other......as the engine spins one fan the other fan will begin to spin due to the force applied through the air on the fins......this is basically what is going on inside the converter but you are using hydraulic fluid to transfer the energy which cannot compress therefore there is no energy loss other than heat due to friction......
the converter has two main parts an impellor and a stator......these are your two "fans" inside the converter.........the angle of the fins on both the impellor and the stator will change which rpm fluid lock will occour at.........thus changing the stall speed.......
that just touches the surface of the operation......theres alot more to them however........
