View Full Version : 2009 G8 GT vs 2006 STI Dig Run

PSM and I were cruising in the G8 tonight on our way to meet some friends for food and I was just telling him that we needed to find a race when we came to a light behind a car and a blue STI (with spoiler delete) pulls past us on the left. As it went by the two guys inside were checking out my car. We decide to put off food for a few minutes and see if they were game.

We got through traffic so no one was in front and we played tag a few times. A couple times it looked like I was pulling him a bit and sometimes it looked like we were pretty even. Either way it was making for a good matchup.

We toyed around for a few miles and finally got to a light that was just turning red with no one in front of us. Two people in each car and PSM looking to try out the camera on his new i-phone

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFff8Xhc8uM

Afterwards I got him to roll down his window and told him it was a good race and he said, "Yeah, remember you beat me in my GT a while back!" Once he said that I instantly remembered the race a couple years ago where we lined up on the highway and I pulled a bit on his bolt-on 2003 Mustang GT with 4 people in my car, lol. He had been really cool about that race and had said he had heard that G8's were fast and wanted to find out.

He just got this car and it's a bit different from launching/driving the Mustang, so I think he could probably beat me with a little practice. We pulled over for minute and talked and he said that his car is a 2006 STI with "exhaust and a Cobb stage 2 tune".

He also said that he's going to end up selling the STI and that he wants to get back into a Mustang, preferably a Cobra.

Very fun, friendly race, and just the fix I needed after a long winter

I didn't think a stock G8 GT would beat a stock Sti, let alone a modded one. What do those older Sti's run?

Great run! STI's can be modded to rock out - I would keep if I were him.

I know about 3 people with Cobb stage 2 STi's. They all run the same low 13's @ 105ish. The G8 might only trap 102-105 but it's gonna whoop an equally trapping STi once speeds get going.

Good runs, I heard PSM is a little slow and tapes things upsidedown...only to be saved by Youtube. :secret2:

That guy definitely needs to work on the shifting. After hearing the 1-2 shift, I went and made some macaroni during the 2-3 and took a fat shit during 3-4.

On a serious note, that STI sounds damn good.

Nice kill! I enjoyed watching that vid, I have a lot of respect for STi's, well built they can be pretty quick. Definitely looks like you were edging on him up top, but I also agree he was lagging to much in-between his shifts and if they were improved he may have pulled a bit. It looked like a really good match though, makes me want to get a good race in!

I raced a similar 06 STi when I had my 2000 SS. It was from a roll but everything else was close your race. We each had a passenger, he had a DP, cat-back, and Cobb tune. I had a Lid abs Cat-back. We were even until the top of second and then I started pulling slowly. Really great cars, and they sound sweet too!

Good kill once again.

Thanks guys! It was pretty much the perfect scenerio, cruising around and randomly running into a car that was a great race for my car. Also, I've been itching to get a good stoplight race since I haven't had one of those in a long time.

Before I ever raced one, I thought I would get pulled by a stock STI from any race, dig or roll, but then I raced my friend's (stock except for exhaust) and was pleasantly suprised:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8Vg79n13lQ

I do agree that the one I raced last night probably could be faster than my car from a dig is he practices a bit. Maybe we'll get the chance to find out!

Here's the race from a while back against the same guy when he had his bolt-on 2003 GT. Don't mind my girlfriend's friend, who apparently thought she was going to die via the extreme G-forces from my 13 second car accelerating. (Crappy camera phone)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ckqypGJ3P0

Also, I hope he has an intake/filter on with an exhaust and stage 2 cobb tune or else that tune will be really bad lol

Can't say as far as that goes. He didn't mention it and he didn't open the hood, so who knows.

When we were screwing around before the dig race it definitely seemed like the STI was finicky in how it had to be driven. We didn't honk or anything, just got next to each other and hit it.

The first run I got a little jump and it looked like he was going to come back by me, but then I started pulling away more. After that, sometimes he would get out a little and hold it there and sometimes I seemed to be walking by without a problem.

It's a got the 6-speed auto. All of the GT's came with that transmission, but the GXP could be had with either.

The Si is a pretty cool car overall. Definately love the bumper change in 09. Looks sexy, smooth ride but handles exceptional, very fun to drive with the short geared 6spd, ect. One thing i will say is the 4dr Si has a ton of room for a sport compact. The rear seat room and leg room is insane. I don't know how they opened up all that room in such a lil car. I'm 6'3" and i can sit in the back comfortably with the seat all the way back. Factory stereo is all anyone would ever need, it bumps really good. Gas mileage we usually avg 32 around town with some interstate and 37ish on interstate only. Best overall was going to Myrtle Beach last summer we got there from Charleston, Wv on just under 1 tank of gas. 468 miles and had 2 dots of gas left. It avg out right at 42mpg. Super reliable and not a bad price. For a daily/baby hauler i couldn't see having anything else honestly. Especially for the price. Oh yeah plus its decently fast bone stock. From a roll it edged out a new auto RS camaro the other month and it will put a lil distance on 99-04ish GT ponys. Thats always fun. ;)

The fuel economy numbers seem high, but it would be a fun all around car.

As far as a stock GT...i don't know about that one.

I'd probably go with a regular civic for the lower purchase cost and insurance costs anyway, so no chasing mustangs.

I had a conversation with my insurance company last week, and it would cost me more to insure a Civic Si than an 05 GTO (cross shopping because i'm considering a GTO or an eco car and a bike on the side). That's insane, but when you think about the number of morons that buy civics...

Road & Track says: mpg - 22/31 mpg (worst of ALL sub compact sport cars)

So does this make the new Civic Si a high-revving screamer? You bet, and we love it. The Si now has the much-needed speed to compete in the pocket-rocket market, ripping off 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds and running through the quarter mile in 15.1 at 94.6 mph. And it's 0.8 sec. quicker to 60 and through the quarter mile than the last Si we tested in the July 2002 issue.

Think he was just pulling our chains, because everything he said is obviously bogus. Interior is just as cramped as any other sub compact, too.

So who can't drive and they do know the Si's have more then 3 gears right? 20mpg??? I mean really......... I don't exaggerate. No need too. The Si isn't much but my god you have alot of faith in a not so fast mustang.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/Speedn108/ae309c9f.mp4

My buddies Stock 4dr Si vs exhaust/intake GT. I mean i'm sure you'll make whatever excuse you want but just do some research. Besides the mustang having the dead stop advantage the Si's will trap just the same if not a lil better in most cases. Been in too many winning races with em to call it luck or driver error. Oh well think what ya want.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhAM_XtVP3Y

Here's our cai Si vs an new auto RS camaro. We never got a good clean run but this was the closest too it out of the 3 runs. RS had us by a fender one race, and we had the other 2. On this run i was catching up to him after he did a flyby losing the 1st time. It looks like i jumped him big but if you watch closely I slowed down to get beside just before he took off again so i just laid back into it. Still the lil 2.0 had enough to pull back by about half a car before he let out or hit his limiter. Yes i know i sound like a punk ass ricer btw. I was really suprised at the outcome. lol Regardless the Si is a decently fast car stock for what it is and what i offers as a good all around daily.

Interior is just as cramped as any other sub compact, too.Everycar has a certain rpm/gear/injector rate that is absolute sex. Do some looking on 8thgencivic.com and you'll see that at 64-65mph the Si will knock down 40 or slightly better no problem. As far as around town, drive sensible and it'll do great. There have been numerous stock Si's run high to mid 14's bone stock. Best i've seen is 14.59 @96. Best i've had ours is 9.5@ 77 in the 1/8th spinning terribly. 2.5 60ft....yuck. I'll see if i got the vid somewhere. Car and Driver got 14.9 on the Si vs GTI article.

well like i say guys it is what it is. I don't have anything i need to prove. Just stating simple facts based on personal experience. Experiences with others may vary. BTW don't most stock GT's trap 98ish mph with proper driver? No different from new V6 camaro's. You all act like the GT is WAY faster then i'm comparing too and thats not the case at all. Plus as i've stated about the Si, its roll speed is much better then its dead stop. The Si's suck balls below 50. Vtec doesn't engage untill 6k and as short as 1st gear is you basically get nothing from it. 2nd is ok but just stating that i can put that Si (or anyone who can actually drive one) up against a 98-99 trap car anyday of the week and it be a drivers race. There's nothing exaggerated about that. I dont know why you all act like i'm stating something so far fetched. A 99 GT is not that fast. It will beat the civic in the 1/8th all and most cases in the 1/4 from a dead stop depending on driver but otherwise its not gonna pull from an Si. Power/weights are extremely close. Anyways i'm done with it. :bomb::burn:

Everything I found on them placed them in that range too, but I would guess closer to 3400 lbs. Also, I found a Honda site that had the Si listed as 2895 lbs. Probably the difference between the 2 door and the 4 door.

Even if we say the Civic is 2800 and the Mustang is 3400, it's 14.21 lbs/hp for the Civic vs 13.08 lbs/hp for the Mustang. If you put a 200 lbs driver in both cars then it gets worse for the Civic. Also, this only takes peak power into account.
