Default Pulling 5th synchro in car

Ok, I think my 5th gear synchro is gone. Its grinding heavily when trying to shift into 5th and you have to jam it for it to work and it only goes in sometimes. Is it possible to pull this apart without pulling the trans out? Thanks, Josh

Anything's possible, but it's really not practical. You have to pull everything in the back half of the trans off and out, then reassemble again. IMHO, the time you save not pulling the trans out will be a wash or worse with all the extra time/care working inside the trans in the car.. You still have to pull the shifter, and remove/lower the cross-member and exhaust, so you really are one step away from just removing the trans from the bellhousing.

Trans is out. Only took about 30 minutes. The 5-6 fork pads are gone. Set of brass replacements are ordered and en route.
