Default FMS F13 is in!!

put this cam in Friday night....im gettin pretty quick at these cam swaps now....anyways i went from a 224 224 581 581 112+2 cam to the F13 specs 230 232 591 595 113+2.....on start up car did not want to idle, every time i pushed the clutch in when driving it wanted to die so i opened up the tbody hole a tiny bit....still hunts on starts but idles about the same as the 224 maybe a slight bit rougher but my idle is at 900 anyways, im using with stage 2 TEA 5.3s they ARE cut .016....first impressions....lost a little bottom end but pulls noticeably strong up top than did the 224 cam...am i satisfied....im not sure yet let me get some more miles on it and throw a decent tune in it and see what she makes on the dyno.....mods consist of
car=02 WS6 6sp
jet hot LT's, Mufflex Yw/flowmaster collector, corsa catback with a cutout, TEA stage 2 5.3 heads cut .016, FMS 230 232 591 595 113+2(stock rockers 987 springs and 7.4 hardened pushrods) Shaner S3 Tbody, MTI lid w/K&N, ASP underdrive pulley, Spec 3 with Mcloud Master, a cutdown Pro 5.0, Moser 12 bolt w/richmond 3:90s, random tech torque arm, BMR LCA's, Hotchkis SFC's, Lakewood DS safety loop, home tuning with LS1edit, and some 18x9.5 Chome Z06's....whats your predictions....i made 420 rwhp 396rwtq with the mods above minus wheels, 224 581 112 cam, stock tbody, no cutout, and no real tune also with the hooker ORP not the mufflex.....dynoed again with the wheels cutout and tbody and lost power....A/F is messed up now so i need a new tune.....whats your predictions everyone and should i be alright with the 987s in there with stock rockers spinning to 6700 or so

driving fine, needs tuning but i drives great. ive only gone through like the beginning of third gear so im not sure how it feels up high, but it is definately stronger

in hoping with tuning to be in the 420-430 range. my old setup pulled 390, since then ive added my exhaust, the new cam, and will get it tuned.

I wouldn't waste too much time before upgrading the springs...

The 987 spring is a great spring but I think your asking too much of it with that cam. My 987's were maxed with ~.590 lift for my set up based on check install height etc but you have a tad over that. This can probably vary a little from head to head. I don't think the 987 can take that cam without valve float for very long. The ramp rate is just too fast/harsh for the pressure of the 987. I think the 987's will lose pressure within 1,500 miles and start to float because that cam will kill them. It's not a fault with the spring it's just not the spring with that cam application.

The 978 should work as well as other springs like the 921 & Cranes.

i'd like to swap to 921's but the spring pocket is all cut out and i'd have a lot of shimming to do with the HEAD ON THE CAR which is the pain.....what do you guys reccomend i do?

Not if the installed heights are the same between the 987 and 921's. If they're the same, all you need to do is use the 921 seats/retainers and you'd be fine.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Or, call COMP and ask them what to do.

Ok, not trying to hijack your post, but Allan from FMS told me that 918s are what he recommends and sells w/ the FM11 which is 228/230 .580 .591 112. I have this cam and am about to replace my 224 w/ it which I am running the 918s with. Are the 918s enough? Don't know if this is a crazy question or not either, but will my TR hardened pushrods be alright to use lengthwise?

918's will work perfectly fine. I've seen 918's on .610 lift setups before. The only drawback to a 918 is that it is a single spring, so if it breaks, 9 out 10 times you're gonna drop a valve which = ...Again, they're a great spring, but should be changed every 10-15K for safety IMO....

Alan recommends the Cranes, which are the springs i'm about to swap in. They will fit the spring pocket where the 987's were...

BTW, "Larry" has a spring tool in the tool section for 25 bucks which makes swapping springs on the car pretty easy...

Kurt you need to get tuned before making an accurate observation on the cam. The FM13 is a TOTALLY different stick than the 224....

damian how did the 987 do for you with the cam you have?.....im only gonna change em if their giving me problems cuz it seems to be a hit and miss with them here lately....but if i did change id either go to the comp 978's, comp 921s, or the crane duals.....but im leaning towards 921's
