the only options for ram air TAs were traction control, cd changer, and hurst shifter. the majority of cars built had all 3, just to force you to buy them all. i ordered mine with just the shifter.

Option
It came as an option on my '01 Trans Am (not a WS6) and it was a $450 feature alone, not packaged with anything else. I just checked my window sticker to verify. I'm not sure how many Trans Ams have it, as it certainly wasn't cheap. I do like it though.

Traction Control (NW9) was installed on:
17.6%* of all Firebirds in 1998
38.5% in '99
40.8% in '00
38.8% in '01
49.8% in '02
* This low number in '98 was probably due to NW9 not being available on V6s until '99.

Mine has it and every other option under the sun (aside from the CD changer which was not available if you got the in dash). Hell the original owner checked the box for the T-Top shades. If it wasn't MRM it'd probably be a WS6.
On topic though, TC is good for some things like rain and slightly slushy surfaces. HOWEVER, it actually becomes totally useless in heavy slush, snow, ice, and hard-pack snow. Essentially anything that if you drive in 'stupid' mode you'll wreck. In those conditions I've had it act like an overly zealous ABS unit and actually turned it off most of the time I had to take it out in the snow (about 4 times).
All in all I'd actually try driving one with the option first (99-02 makes no difference) and play with it, find some puddles or wet spots to slide it around in and see whether or not it's worth the bother.
Remember, it can't be shut off permanently, only via the switch and is reset every time the car is turned off.
Hope this helps..

I would not worry about traction control, worry about finding an '01 or '02 M6 Black on Black WS6. That should be hard enough. For the record my WS.6 did not have traction control or cd changer and im perfectly fine with it, no buyers remorse what so ever. less weight actually.

Mine has it, and Zabo is 100% correct. The times I've had the car in the snow, I've had to shut off the TC to get it to even move.
It's a pretty primitive sytem, all it does is cut engine power when it detects wheelspin. It doesn't modulate the brakes or help with traction at all like alot of other cars system's do.
It's good if say your heavy footed GF is driving it in the rain, but other than that, for anyone who knows how to drive a RWD car, it's useless.

i know it was alone. there were no option packages, other then ram air/ws6. my point was that the majority of car that were sitting on dealer lots had all or most of the options already installed.

Honestly, it's not worth even worrying about as said before, its pretty worthless. The operation of it goes like this, detects wheelspin, a pretty little light that say "LOW TRAC" shows up and your pedal starts popping like a virgins cherry on prom night. Case closed..

actually tc has saved my *** once.. i was on a bridge in the middle lane and needed to get into the left lane to make my exit.. i had to give a lil gas to get in front of traffic... when i hit the gas and switched lanes my tires broke loose and my back end went towards the median.. the traction control kicked in and cut off engine power and kicked the pedal back at me.. if it didnt do this i would have hit the median without a doubt
like said before.. try to find the car youre looking for first.. tc is not a reason to pass up a good deal but i am glad i have it

In my opinion its not something that would make or break a deal on a car. My '98 doesnt have it but my '02 does and I wish it didnt, but the SLP module works great (as long as you start the car from the key off position). As far as I know it can't be disabled in the tune - at least not the part that cuts throttle. You can eliminate the spark retard function of it though.

Well, I have a 6 speed with TC, and I use it. Although it isn't the same as Stability Control, it will keep you straight in a corner when your close to sliding out.
I accidentally had it "off" once when I was expecting it to be on, and I wiped out.
But you can certainly live without it. If you are accustomed to knowing the limits of the car, you don't need it. And it doesn't work for drag racing.
