OP are you looking at the 295/50/16 MT drag radials? If so they will fit just fine...per MT's website it says they fit 8"-10" wheels. Plenty of people have run them without any issues.

I've personally mounted 295/50/15s on 8 inch wheels with no issues before so being an inch taller shouldn't make much difference if any. I believe the reason a 295/50 will fit on an 8" rim and be ok and a 315/35 wont fit on a 9" rim is because the 295/50 has a taller sidewall that has more give and flex.

You can fit a size 10 foot in a size 13 shoe as well, doesn't mean it's a good idea. If you did mount a 295 on a 8" wide rim, you wouldn't be utilizing the entire width of the tire tread, however.
Cons:
More expensive tires
Less safe
Not utilizing entire tread
Pros:
It looks cool (to some)
a 295/50 would have the same size sidewall no matter what brand it is The second number in a tire size is the aspect ratio, which indicates sidewall size in a percentage to the first number in the tire size (tire width) so in this case, the sidewall height would be 50% of the width of the tire (295). It won't/shouldn't vary much from brand to brand as the width is measured in millimeters.
