700r4 fresh rebuild, no 3 or 4 and very slippy
i just rebuilt a 84 700r4 and i cant get 3rd or 4th gear. i have reverse, 1 and 2, but it will not shift out of 2nd (i hit rev limiter in it). i know that because i dont have the TCC wired up yet its going to slip in some gears, but i really am at a loss here.
all the clutches, gaskets, and seals were replaced, along with a shift kit.
any input on where i should start looking or what i should fix would be great.

Is your tv geometry correct? If not then thats most likely the problem.
The TCC not being connected is not going to effect how it shifts.
What boost valves and servo do you have and what is the servo clearance and 3-4 clutch clearance? Whats the feed hole sizes for the band release, 3rd apply? Did you leak check the 3rd check ball capsule?
Are you using a shift kit?
Did you use grease anywhere?
The first transmission I ever built for myself was an 84 1/2 700R4. I used a TransGo 2&3 kit also and it said to use thick grease to hold various parts in place.
That transmission was very soft and inconsistant for the first 75 miles or so. I drove it easy and it kept getting better and better, after approx a week of driving every day 45 minutes one way to work. Eventually it shifted great in all gears, even 4th was nice and firm. My guess is that the grease needed time to melt away, I've never used grease in a transmission in big blobs again.
I changed the filter in that one 500 miles later and took the 1-2 accumulator out for an adjustment and there was still grease in it.

i got a floor shifter installed today so that i could get manual 1 (stock linkage wouldnt get it) and got a correct speedo gear in.
There was some assembly grease used in a few different places, and im going to do the TV adjustment again tomorrow to see if that changes anything
as for clearences i cant really say i remember them, i do know that they were all in spec. I did it in my automatic transmission rebuild class and the instructor was the #1 GM transmission tech in the nation, so im going to keep talking to him about what he thinks it is.
After the Tv adjustment tomorrow and (hopefully) wiring up the TCC ill b able to diag the transmission better
