Default oil pump

i 97 z28 vert
ive been having trouble with my oil pressure 99% of the time i have great pressure at idle its between 1/4 and 1/2 and under load its between 1/2 and 3/4 on the gauge but if i have to brake hard it drops down to zero for a few seconds then comes back up to normal i have hooked up a mech. gauge to the plug right by the oil filter and its reading the same im gonna be dropping the pan to see whats going on in there any suggestions before i tear her open also im going to be changing the oil pump while the pan is down regardless if thats the problem ive looked up oil pumps and there is two diffrent pumps for this car one has a 3/4 inlet and the other has a 5/8 inlet does it matter witch one i get or is there a way to find out wich one i need before i start the project

if you get zero oil pressure under heavy breaking, the oil pickup likely fell off.

IF its stock go to your local auto parts store and get a stock melling 155. Get the steel drive shaft as well. WELD on the pick up. You want to measure the distance from the pick up to the bottom of the pan. Should be 1/2" from the bottom of the pan IIRC

I'd do a Melling 10554 (Select Series). It comes with the steel collar drive shaft. It is a stronger casting than the 155 (which are not recommended even by Melling for racing applications). GM changed from 5/8" to 3/4" oil pump inlets during the 94 model year.

Im running that oil pump with the GM white spring. Im very happy with it!

no the oil is not low yes it is stock except for a cat back and 3/4 inlet is the way to go i was able to get my hands on a boroscope i think im gonna stick it in there this weekend for a look around before i get started on this project thank you all for such quick replys

ok took a peak inside this morning the pickup fell off the pump anybody have a right up on taking the pan out

As a side note my old 93 also had the larger inlet tube.
