Default What is this hole in my tranny?

Putting everything back together and I found this hole up by the breather tube. As far as I can remember, there was no plug in it. It is a T56.
What the hell is it??

You're missing the shift selector detent spring/ball. It looks similar to a regular large bolt on the outside, but it has a captured roller bearing tip with a detent spring on the inside.

Hmm, don't recall ever seeing anything like that. Know where I can get a new one or how to put it in? Been doing some looking around and can't find much. Thanks!

Confirmed it with some pics of the original pull. That SOB was never in there! Just an empty hole. I know it was taken out and rebuilt once before. They must have just left it out.

Yeah looks like it fell off at some point though. Hard to say when. I would rather just get a new shift detent and be done with it.

Ah screw it. The motor and tranny are already back in the car. I'll just plug it up and be done with it.

you will want to have the detent in there for shiftability. Without it your trans will shift like ***.

Can it be installed without dropping the tranny? Do I just need to get one and thread it into the hole and be done with it? Can't seem to find any info on that or where the hell to get one.

it can be installed and removed while in car, people do the "anti venom" mod (which puts a washer on the bolt to lessen spring pressure and supposedly help it to shift smoother)

I think the real problem is going to be finding a new one. I think someone on here lost the ball that sits in there while doing that mod and I don't seem to remember him ever finding a replacement
