Default LS engine with early transmission

I have seen a few articles and got some input from the various forums regarding 7004r, th350 and 400 trannies mated to ls engines. They all mention bolting an adapter to the back of the crank to make up for the difference in crank length. I get that , but if you move the flywheel back to bolt up the tranny and converter, how does the starter engage the flwheel when its further back? Thanks for you help in advance! Scott!

It is a different flywheel. The spacer uses flat flywheel. Where no spacer uses an offset flywheel

You still need the spacer/adapter

Using a flat flexplate, it's a spacer. Using a 4L60E dished flexplate, its bolted on the end after the flex and acts as an adapter

The other option is having a custom converter built that has the gen3 bolt pattern on the front. Any converter shop will gladly build it at an extra cost, then you dont have to be concerned with spacers. But the spacer is economical for someone using a tc they already have, but if you were wanting to do a stall upgrade then the mod could easily be done.

i understand that in this conversion i would use the stock, flat, th350 flexplate and the stock converter will bolt up , but once again, if I do this, as some articles say, how does the starter engage when the flywheel ring gear is back further. Am I missing something?

You'll use a 5.3L dished flex plate. It bolts on first then the crank spacer after it. The flex plate stays in the same place the dish of it makes up for it and the starter engages normally.

It will look like this with the dish flexplate

The flat 6.0L plate has the spacer on the crank side and is flat.

thanks for the picture, so , then I assume I need a converter that has the mounting tabs constructed so as to take up the same width factor as the spacer- no straight bolt up of a stock converter, . Correct?

You can also use a flat flexplate. I used one off an LQ9 6.0L for my LS1. I just put the spacer behind the flexplate and use the longer bolts that you can get with the spacer. The starter bolts up just the same. You will have to drill new holes in the flexplate. I've had mine in this way for a year with no issue. I'm running a 98' LS1 with a 92' 700r4 in a 72 Camaro

The spacer is intended to be used with whatever converter matches your transmission. Should you decide to use a later model(98+) transmission and converter then you will not need the spacer. Should you decide to go with a 4l80e then you can use any year
4l80e so long as you use the flat flywheel.

I've got a built 200R4 bolted to mine, using the spacer (1st) then a flat flexplate with longer bolts. This has all been done before, numerous times. A search will bring you a few hours worth of reading...

To use the 4l60e with the Gen III V8 GM changed the torque converter by adding a nub on the center hub that contacts the crank to support the TC.

Gen III converter

SBC 700r4 converter note smaller shorter hub

Gen III engines with a stock 4l60/65/70 GM uses a dished flex plate the one on the right note the shorter crank bolts.

On Gen III engines using the 4l80 trans which uses a converter with the Gen I style center hub GM used a Flat flex plate and a spacer mounted between the crank and flex plate. This mounts the TC flush with the center hub.

The flat flex plate is on the left note the longer bolts.

Dished 5.3L flex plate mated to a SBC Gen I 700r4/early 4l60e converter. Note the hub is un-supported because its to short. as well a small torque converter bolt pattern, you have to elongate the holes alittle fot it to line up

Flat 6.0L flex plate and spacer on a SBC converter. Note hub is supported by the spacer. As well has it has 6 bolt holes for veter. So you have to drill new holes to use on the early 4l60e or 700r4/th350 etc...

So how about using a '98 and newer converter on a 700r4? I know the 700r4 and the early 4l60e have the same splines and converters, do the later 4l60e share the splines also? And is there a kit and part number for the spacer used with the flat flywheel. I have both flywheels for my 4.8l. Any parts numbers would be greatly appreciated.

No, input shaft has a different tip on the earlier trans, but both are same spline, can't use early non PWM converter in 95-9x PWM trans even though they fit.

I have a lq4 6.0 going to mate a th400 to it. That flexplate will work all i need is a spacer and longer bolts and oblong the holes for the TC. Am i understanding this correctly?

Where can i get just the spacer and bolts from? Thanks for the help.

Im curious...why would you want to keep the 700r4? They had alot of design flaws which have been corrected in the 4l60/e. Namely the front seal walking out and the hunting between 3 and 4 gear. The TV cable gets misadjusted or stretches and you burn the 700r4 up.
Alot more logical and economical as far as a rebuild goes to have a 4l60/e built. I sure wouldn't put a 700r4 behind an lsx without it being fresh.

what year is your lq4? did it come with a flexplate when you bought it?
