Question How far in the air must you get your car to remove the transmission?

So I need to pick up 2 pair of jack stands so I can pull my tranny. Went to Harbor Freight yesterday and looked at some...

Ive done stick removals on those same jack stands many times. It isn't easy, but it can be done. The worst part is getting the transmission on and off the jack.

Yeah sorry, I ment manual transmission. The autos are a little harder to do on those short jack stands because of the bellhousing.

Get it as high as you can so the tranny can roll out on whatever you use to lower it. When I had stock single type exhaust, it was easy for me to roll it out on the jack.

Now I have TD's and I dont want to got to the trouble to drop pipes but now I cant roll it out any longer like before. I need a helper to wrestle it of of the jack under the car and when its ready to go back in, wrestle back onto the jack which is a terrific PITA under the car.

My father-in-law said I can use his motorcycle jack for the tranny... anybody ever try that approach?

These are the ones that I use. They may be a little overkill but I like em.

Keep in mind not to get the chassis so high that the jack can't lift the tranny high enough to mate with the motor, talk about a pain in the ***!! I speak from experience

I got the HF trans jack, and The "V" on it fit a t56 really well. Its 99$ I htink but they it one sale for $75. I don't even use the strap or anything. I've done it with a alum racing jack in a parking lot. That sucks, a auto with a big 2 x12 under the pan on a floor jack is one thing but a t56 a floor jack sucks. The trans jack is good to have too, you can put rearends on it and such, but if you dont even have jackstands you need them more.

The one time I put the car on jack stands extra tall enough to get the trans on the HF jack to roll under the car. That sucked, I think installed was about as tall as the trans jack went, but the car was really far away (from you laying on your back), you had to reach for everything. The top bolts suck even worse, there too far away to reach. You get a stiff neck, and the blood leaves your arms. Now I just put the car on stands at a normal conformable height (have shoulder room) and put the t56 on the trans jack, (can do it myself now)/ Drain the fuild 1st...... Slid the trans under the car on the floor, lift the nose the trans by the input shaft and slid the trans jack under it. So the trans is like 45* but sits good on the front plate. Then pick out the back of the trans and get the floor jack under the trans mount. Jack the back end up, and pull the trans on the HF jack. Its sketchy, but done it a few time by myself.

I'd rather not have the car as high as you need for a auto bellhousing like Jeremy is talking about.

Also your Ypipe if its short might get in the way. I made mine longer and mellow for power, and so I can fit the trailshaft thu the Ypipe with it on still.

The second set of stand you found will work. I recomend the higher you can get the better as its not easy in anyway to get a trans out with low jackstands. Ive watched friends try LOL
