honestly a radar detector you will always want it as high as possible. the higher it is the better/longer range it detects.
best place is right by the rear view mirror or right at the windshield tint strip.
and i would recommend a valentine 1.

I think he is talking about the ones that the detector itself is mounted elsewhere on the car while the lights and alerts are mounted in the dash.
Usually seen on audi's, bentlys, porches, lambo's, etc... sensors are installed in the grills and such.
What I can recommend? No freaking clue.

I have had a K40 Remote, Passport SR7, Bel RX75 Pro, and now an Escort Qi45.
The K40 worked okay but I wasn't happy with it because its only display was a single red LED. You had to determine signal type and strength entirely by the alert sound. Their newer Caliber system is an improvement with voice alerts and it is the only one with separate front and rear receivers. It's also wireless so installation is much easier.
The Passport SR7 and Bel RX75 Pro are essentially the same. They use identical receivers with the only difference being the inside head unit. I was very pleased with their performance. My wife still has the SR7 in her SUV and loves it. They have front and rear laser detection but only front radar. To be honest, I've never found that to be a problem - once you know how to interpret the alerts you can tell where a signal is coming from. The thin head unit fits nicely below the HVAC controls with no dash modification:
The radar receiver went under the front of the car and the front laser receiver fit nicely at the bottom of the front plate cover:
I now have the Escort Qi45. It uses the same sort of receiver as the SR7 and RX75 Pro although the internals have been upgraded to include the laser detector in the same module with the radar detector and there is no rear laser detector (I don't think I'll ever miss that). It's called the Qi45 for Quick Install, 45 minutes. They lie - it took a couple of hours to do it neatly. I've only had it for a couple of months but I am very pleased overall. It seems to false a little more often but it also seems to be a little more sensitive although that may be related to the mounting position behind the grille.
