I want to keep this build on the low cost end so i'm thinking external pump. i have read alot about how they are problematic as heck. What is the best way to set up an external fuel pump to avoid most of these issues? Is than an in tank method that wont break my wallet?

Umm, could you be a little more specific? Hard to spec a fuel system with so little info. We have no idea what car or engine or carbed or injected or blown or N/A or...

Most External pump failed because they are setup incorrectly. make sure the pump is mounted low and below the fuel line. second make sure they are in a area where air flow can be circulated around it.

External pump are made to push and not pull fuel. So being low and as close to rear of the tank is a mush. sump the pick up to prevent fuel starvation of the pump.

so, with the basic of the external pump out of the way. what are you running.. EFI or Carb ? how much HP.. these answer will tell you how much flow and pressure the pump will need to be spec'd out to.

You should check out the Tanksinc.com setup which is pertty cheap for a solution to get intank pump setup.
