I bought my 1965 Chevelle EFI tank 2 years ago and inside the tank is a sump. Even with the sump, my engine starves for fuel when low on gas and while making everyday turns on the street. I've been searching Ls1tech and the Chevelle forum but i have yet to find a solution for me. My tank has been used already, so cutting and welding it requires some work that has to be performed by a radiator shop. Is there a way to modify the tank / sender without welding it?

get a surge tank. it will hold a small amount of fuel so the the motor wont starve. cxracing.com is where i got mine.

I have seen that surge tank before. Don't you have to run an external pump with that setup? I'm not a big fan of external pumps because of the noise. I like the idea of a surge tank. Only if I can fit one into the existing hole I have.

you do have to run an external pump. i dont care for the noise either but its better than fuel starvation.

There's been all kind of talk about these tanks, but havn't heard of any cure. I wish there was. Im in the same boat. Just haven't filled mine with any gas yet, but will need to soon. Mine is about 2 yrs old, so no warranty..

Today I bought a used fuel pump assembly from a 1998 GMC Savana for $20. I bought it to understand how it works and hopefully use some of the parts on it to use on my home brew in tank sump canister.

I also considered baffling mine also but I'm not sure if there a way that actually works.

The hole is too small to make a canister sump. I'm going to order a regular tank, cut it and put a ford F350 pump assembly into it? Any one interested in buying a regular 65 Chevelle tank and an EFI tank? I'll give you a good deal!

the only difference is that my idea would be inside the tank. The fuel sump / canister would be filled using umbrella valves and the return line instead of a second fuel pump.

Pisses me of that Spectra sells a tank designed for EFI that does not work properly. THEY should be coming up with a solution to the problem!! Guess that is too much to ask, a company to correct their design flaw. I, like alot of people, had not even installed my tank before the waranty was already up.

Plenty of companies selling junk and getting away with it. I have one of these tanks as well and I suppose when the time comes I will be either modifying or replacing the tank.

I called on 2-24-11 and spoke to a guy named John (tech dept) and he said there's not a problem. It's been blown out of proportion according to him.. He told me just put it in and not worry about it... He wouldn't even tell me what pump is on it or where i could get one other than calling them to get one.. Which doesn't do me any good if it happens on a sunday when Im 900 miles away in Nashville. That kinda ercked me!

So, I dought they will admit any wrong! If there dealers quit buying it they may just drop it from there line!

I bought mine from Rick Auto a little over a year ago. The fuel pump went out shortly after the initial test drive. This common issue, along with the well publicized starvation matters, prompted me to seek a return / refund. I spoke with a supervisor at Rock Auto who allegedly contacted Spectre regarding my request and was told they won't do anything if the tank is outside the 1 year warranty period.

I asked about exchanging it for the "new and improved" tank and was told Rock Auto no longer carries Spectre tanks nor do they have any plans to do so in the future. I got the impression they were tired of fielding calls such as mine and are now distancing from the product altogether.

I too am amazed that there is no recourse for selling a faulty product...

Rock auto still has a listing for the Spectre tank for my Chevelle. Maybe they're still getting rid of the on hand inventory. I've had starvation issues will fuel level right around 1/2 tank.

They should be required to make it right. Maybe a class action lawsuit by all of us "make believe" starvation issues owners.

I think mine is still within the one year window. How much of an issue is it trying to ship a used tank back? I would think there would be issues with the carrier for transporting a used fuel tank.

I went with a Walbro 255 per the recommendation of several on here. I did not purchase it from Rock Auto.
