Default Rear end question

Ok.. I just got a 2000 z28 auto. I want to change the rear end to like a 3:73 or 3:42. Will just the gear fit? Or do I have to change anything else. I read something about a carrier? Can someone please help me out.. It is currently a 2:73 or something like that.. Please share experiences with rpm's and what not...

Thanks....

First, check your door code. If it's a GU2 you have 2.73s and a two series carrier. If it says GU5 it's a three series carrier with 3.23s. Look on WS6store and you'll see they sell various intall kits. While you're doing it, it's worth the time to change out everything and make sure you're doing it right.

I went from 2:73s to 3:73s a month ago...At 70mph with 2:73s I was running 1900rpm.
Now I run 1900 at 55-57 mph and it was def worth it....the gears, install kit, fluids, install and frost tune cost about 750$

If I was you I would keep a look out in the classifieds and CL and find a used rear and swap it. Keep your current one util you break the new one when you start to do mods, and while your saving for a 12 bolt or 9 in.

I am looking to keep it a weekend warrior. I have a local guy that has done my gears in the past but was wondering what is the deal with the series of carriers? What are my limitations with each series? as far as ratios....

thanks everyone for the help.
