Default Larger EPS cam choice for LS2? Advice please-

Guys, I have my 06 C6 M6, non Z51 with 3:42.

I am ordering my cam from Geoff tomorrow and I am still on the fence.

Here are my choices, so please help point out the pros and cons.

I'm sure everyone is aware of the 503rwhp LS2
(Patrick G custom 234/242 .602/.605" 112LSA +4 advance cam ground with EPS lobes). 177.3 mph in the mile event.Tighter exhaust due to my plan for ported heads.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomet...s-503rwhp.html

NOW, my cam would be slightly adjusted (tighter exhaust duration)for the ported heads (later) so my spec would be 234/238 .602/.604" 112+4 advance

Now Pat also has a larger one
(Patrick G custom 238/242 .604/.605 112LSA +4 advance cam ground with EPS lobes).

Pat mentioned that the difference is probably between 5-7rwhp between the two and the street manners would be a little better with the smaller cam.

My current mods-

FAST 102
Ported TB
Dynatech 1 7/8's 3x3 C6Z headers
Off road X
GHL 3" C6Z axle back
Vararam CAI
UD pulley (not installed yet)

I do plan on adding heads later, TFS 225's (as Pat says they will allow better PTV clearance if I choose the larger 238/242 cam).

Any pros or cons you guys can think of? I don't plan on changing the gear, it will remain a 3:42 and the car is the lightest 1LT so I don't really think the larger cam would affect the street manners, since it does have EPS lobes and the car is very light to begin with. Horsepower Sales will be tuning so the tune will also be top notch.

Please lend your advice,

Go medium or go big? Do you think you would sacrafice 5-7rwhp to have a little better driver? But in reality, how bad should a 238/242 drive in a light M6C6?

I would get the smaller cam. I'm probably one of the few people that would go with the smaller cam in that everybody always have the bigger is better mentality. In an m6 car I like good drivability. I like to be able to take off from a redlight in a bog and come right out of it like a stock car. I don't like the bucking and surging from bigger cams off a redlight but most good tuners can tune a big cam to not do the such.

A big cam with good heads will make power but a medium sized cam with a great set of heads will too, with better drivability.

A smaller cam will shine in the mid-range with you gear being a 3.42 also.
Pick a cam that will give you the overall package when you put your heads on, driveability and power.

Thank you Bullet.

I am leaning towards the slightly smaller cam thinking I can make up the 5-7rwhp difference somewhere else. Cam swaps in C6's are a PITA compared to an F-body, otherwise I'd just go big then go back smaller if I didn't like it but that's alot of work in a C6-

I had an '06 c6 6spd and I told myself that if I was going to change the cam in this car it was going to become a bigger motor since I was going to damn near have to yank the motor.

I ended up trading it away on a H/C/I 01 camaro. Its getting a 416 now with an EPS spec'd cam

I have the larger cam you listed in an LQ4 short block. Rest of mods in sig. I wish I could give you a better summary of how the cam is, but I've been breaking in the clutch and am still driving it on a fairly base tune. What I can tell you is that even with a pretty base tune, driveability has been very good so far. There's a little bucking at slow speed/low rpms (like under 1500), but the rest of the time it drives well. It cruises at 1800rpm at 70 on the highway with absolutely no issues. I really think once the tune is finalized, it will be perfect.

Sorry I don't have more to report on it, but so far I'm pleased.

Thank you sir, please keep me updated on it but at the last minute, I'll just flip a coin I guess, hoping to favor the larger one

Love Q's buildup but he does have 4.10s and you said you were sticking
with the 3.42s. Given that I'd say smaller cam BUT his engine is 10.55
and yours is 10.8 ????...Plus if you go w/Trickflows.....probably splitting
hairs....awh hell flip a coin

I would stay with the smaller cam because of your 3.42 rear gear and M6 tranny.. To me the 5-7 hp peak loss would be worth the better street manners the car would have.. Being an M6 car you would also have a little better mid range torque with the smaller cam so to me the car would recover better through shifting with those gears. I bought a EPS cam for my LS2 build but it's a lot bigger than those cams you are looking at.. 246/255-632/606@113+2LSA But remember I am using trick flow 215cnc heads and a ported 90mm fast intake.

Go with the proven cam, save yourself the wishing you'd gone with a smaller cam for your DD, and if you haven't already dropped the coin on new heads you have the option of milled or unmilled to bump CR without worrying so much about PTV clearance, which is where you could tack on the lost horsepower.

IMO, the smaller cam would even benefit from a gear change (more enjoyable/street able), so I'd go with the smaller cam just for the fact you plan on sticking with the 3:42 rear gears. You'll definitely want to change gears if you go with the larger cam; 3:73 or 3:90's at least.

Think about the valve springs. Im sure you will be happy not to change them as often.
