What kind of prices have you been estimated?

What kind of prices have you been estimated?

I have had general mechanics quote me around $300 to do the gears, all the bearings, etc and axle bearings..

and I have had transmission shops quote me 600-800$ to do the work.

Most mechanics will do it in a day, the tranny shops want a few days.

I have no problems paying $300, but i'm sure none of these guys have done gears before, especially not on this car..

I don't want my car at a tranny shop for 2 or 3 days.

and then there's the difference between paying for how long something takes, and for what you think it's worth to do the work..

300 seems fair. where they small shop or dealerships. three hundered is fair just be carefull that the guy who does it knows what hes doing not alot of new tech dont know how to set them up right. you need to find out if the guy know how to set them up. you will be the one lisenting to whining if not set up right. plus you need a special tool for side bearrings. you have to measeure backlash tooth patter contact. plus tighten pininon proprlyiy. seen alot of guy over torqe pinion nut with gun and diff makes noisey.just from pinion seal replacement. my 01 ws6 had pinion seal replaced under warr and guy fucked it up it still makes noise on highway under load. i will be doing this soon too. i have been in gm for 6 year and only rebuild 2. out of all the places i worked theres only 3 guy that i know old school tech that know how to set them up right and fast only takes them 3 4 hr. older techs are used to doing this all the car they worked on were rear wheel drive. so from there. if it a young guy he prob dont know. i dont even know been in the trade 6 year and only rebuilt 2. do some resurch and find a guy eho knows. what year is your car.

It's a 93.

300 is definitely fair but you know how it is in Canada.. everyone wants to gouge you..

I would pay 300$ easy for someone with experience to do it..

I paid $380 cash for a known differential guy who went on his own after GM. $300 would have been nice but these guy's are guru's in their field. I am an HVAC mechanic and understand my trade but to get a gear right the first time takes experience and sense for what works. Many guy's do it on their own and I am not knocking them. A GM shop will only stand behind GM gears, find someone who knows how to set up your gear!

dont go to dealer your looking for trouble i worked a many gm dealers alot of techs have no idea what there doing all good techs get out of the trade because dealer pays garbage. right now only bad tech in dealer last gm i worked at had 30 techs only 5 were actually good techs. i have heard good things about champion motors. never used them yet but plan on getting my tune there and buy my heads and arh headders from them.

I will check champion. With most places I hate the 'I'm the best mechanic in the word and I deserve big bucks' type of attitude.. I remember one guy that was open 10 - 4, weekdays only, charged $120 an hour and you needed to make an appointment a week in advance. The guy wanted 4 days and 800$ to change a steering rack..

Mister Transmissiion just east off of Keele south of the 407. "Joe" runs the shop. They do a lot of work on 10 bolts. I have had them install two clutches, a torsen t2r and rebuild my m6. Always been really happy with there work and it is not an easy task getting the car up to them from Hamilton.

You can trust Fern at Champion or Darren at RevN High. Both have many years experience with F-bodies including gears, Fern installed my 12 bolt in my Camaro.
