Default Swapping Steering Wheel controls

So I have a 97 trans am and I wanted to switch out the steering wheels controls, for a set of black ones like the camaro. The late 90's monte carlos looked like they had the same steering wheel controls as the camaro. There black with white writing and unlike the TA ones the surface is smooth (on TA grey ones they have little imprints on the surface for your fingertip) so anyways I went to the salvage yard and snagged a set off of one. Got it home, unclipped the stock controls from my TA and tried to put it in, they fit the steering wheel, but I can't connect the two stock blue and red wires into it cuz it just doesn't fit. Here is my question if i go back to the salvage yard, cut the two wires with the connector and solder them to my TA wires will that work? Or is the camaro and TA ones different cuz i know this swap as been done before.
