Help my cousin find a cool first car
My cousin who lives in Simi Valley just got his license and he's looking for a stockish sporty car that can be modded to be fast/cool. He is NOT a mechanic. Anybody know of anything like this for sale? Details below:
Rules set by parents:
Cars liked by cousin:
The dad is a car guy and has a '69 Nova with a 383 stroker built by QMP, so he knows a project when he sees one...
Rules set by parents:
- $3000 or less
- 1990 or newer (ABS/airbags I guess?)
- no heavily modded/abused cars. "old lady" type preferred
Cars liked by cousin:
- 240SX - S13/S14
- Integra
- XJ Jeep Cherokee

1st choice: I would get the 240sx. fun with a rear wheel drive, and very sporty.. and theres alot of hybrid 240's with LS1's so that would make a great project!
2nd choice: the integra, fun cars, good hp per litre motors (type r, or GSR) and good for all weather.. good JDM projects
will keep an eye out

He doesn't like F-bodies, or mullets. So, not even a 90-92,since even they REEK of '80s.
Thanks. Let me know if you find anything. I found several on Craigslist, but they all had a bunch of mods (aka "beat on") or were just out of his price range. If they would take $3k at their $3500 OBO price, that counts as well.

DSM's are the best bang for your buck.. I used to have a 2g
I wouldnt recomment one, they break alot haha, Crank walk came in the 7bolt motors that are in the 2gs.. but regardless wich gen it is, the trannys suck, the stock turbos suck, they just kinda suck.. Good projects but i would stay away for a 1st car that is lol

GTP should cover all his bases and be an excellent first car. Very reliable, good perforance/dollar margin when modding with factory boost and even decent mileage. Good all weather cars, quick enough to be fun.

You wont find a GSR for around 3k. RX7 is not reliable. Your best bet is a Civic, or something in the Honda family. only bad thing about them is they get broken into and stolen to easily. Add mods and its 10 times more likely to get broken into or jacked.
240 for around 3k is doable, Easy to mod, or do a SR20 swap or like stated above, LSx swap.
GTP can be found for around 3k. You just have to find them.

Got a FC LS1/4L60E swap..4k all the hard work done..just need it to pass smog/state ref..runs and drives =D
I would say 240sx also..it was my first car and fun to drive..didn't stay stock for too long tho because that KA24 is a purring kitten that runs like a snail...
GSR under 3k is salvaged and in pieces...very hard to find under 6k..
Jeeps are always out there good luck tho...many times they're real beat up and trashed.

You can find a nice GTP for 3k. I bought a '97 for $1100. It had over 200k on it but it was in great condition. I put a few thousand miles on it in a couple months and it never skipped a beat.
The Pontiac forums constantly have very nice cars going in the 3k range. Check out ClubGP.
