Default SES codes

The other day my SES light came on. There was no noticeable change in performance. I figured it might be a gas cap issue so I took it off/put it back on but the SES light was still on. I asked a local mechanic to run a OBD check and he said the light wasn't on anymore, plus there was no code history. Right now, the light is off and all is well (I hope).

Question: Even if it was a gas cap issue, shouldn't there be a code history?

Default

I would think so, I thought anytime the light came on the code got saved in a archive type file even after being cleared.
