Default Fuel pump

Hey guys I had to replace the fuel pump in my wifes car the other day. The tech said that if you don't keep the fuel level up in your car it will heat up your pump and shorten the life. Anybody got any thoughts on this?
I just put a new Walbro in and I have always run my tank down to a 1/4 before I fill up.

On earlier cars where there was no fuel bucket, this had some truth.

In todays builds, there is less of a concern, but it is always wise not to run it empty, especially in a performance application.
