Convertible Vehicles - 3 Point SFC's???

View Full Version : 3 Point SFC's???

Has anyone found 3 point SFC's that will fit a vert? I contacted UMI and BMR. Both reps told me that they plan to produce them in the near future. But, they would not give me a date (that was in January). I relly doubt hey will produce them this year. If we could find a set, I am sure someone could photograph them them and post measurements (if that is not breaking any patent rules). That way, we could have 3 point SFC's made locally. Does anyone have a set that they could photograph and post measurements?

Has anyone installed 3-point subframe connectors on a convertible F-body?

I found an unused set of SLP subframe connectors. They're 3 point. Got em for only $135 too. There's gotta be more sets of them around somewhere.

Maybe I'll post in the "parts wanted" section...

The SLP's aren't the "double diamond" type, but they do have 3 mounting points.

Do you have a link for the convertible SLP SFC's?
I looked on LM performance. But, all of the descriptions said "except convertibles".

farmington

no. All I know is that SLP used to sell them but don't anymore. They still sell them for non-verts. Maybe contact them, might be some laying around. I got mine from a guy who got them with his car and didn't want to put them on. Must have been good timing.

If you can find a shop in Central FL that will make custom 3-point SFC's for verts, please let me know. A shop might be more motivated if we have several sets made at once. Count me in for two sets as long as the price is not crazy! I was not able to motivate BMR, UMI, or any of the local South FL shops.

Probably would be easier and cheaper to buy a set of 2 point bars and have them modified to 3 point.

I just posted a message on UMI's wall on Facebook, I'm curious if this will actually happen, I was planning on buying the SFC's they have in stock currently during the 4th of July sale. This is going to complicate things haha

EDIT!

Here is what I posted on Facebook and the responce:

Me: Any plans to make 3pt SFC's for convertible F-bodies?
UMI: Yes we do, we hope over the summer to finish them. Right now things are pretty busy so newer products are tough. Usually new product developement begins at the end of July. I will keep you updated!

Hope the are positive about this, I am itching to get any type of SFC on my car at this point!

Yeah, I kind of wondered if there were totally serious or not. I planned on buying the current SFC's they have during the 4th of July sale but held of because of his response. If they don't have anything started by the time the next sale starts for New Years, I'm just going to buy the set they have now.

Hello,

We hope to start these in the beginning of August if all goes well.

Please understand when doing product development it takes time and research as well as testing. The SFC's aren't really that tough of a project, the hardest part is adding them in to a list of other projects. To be honest no business (at least us) wants to lead a customer on intentionally, we just get so e-mails, calls and request for different products sometimes it is really tough to stay on track and focused on one item.

As soon as I have a proto completed I will post a picture.

If we can get enough people I would do a group purchase or discount. I can tell you right now price will be around $319 for a weld in 3-Point and $339 for bolt in set up (This is what our hard top/t-top 3-Points are going to as of August 1st do to steel cost increase)

Based on these prices with a discount on top how many would be interested? Assuming we come out with a pretty killer design :)

I can do a good discount with a group however I don't want people to think they will be 50% off or something crazy like that.

Thanks for the reply Ryan! I'm definitely interested, as stated on your Facebook page and here :D. I completely understand that development takes time, and with the satisfaction with the current products I've bought from you, I have no feelings of you guys intentionally leading anyone on. I think you will have a lot more people interested then just who has posted here in the convertible section. I see people quite often looking for old SLP 3-point SFC's and ways to have custom ones made for their cars. I know you guys won't come short of finding people for a group purchase, and I've put my money aside for this :)

By the way, might want to change the wording here...

You definitely have interest. You might even put up a thread at some point in the Suspension section of the forum, I'd imagine more people with convertibles look there then here. That way you get to a bigger audience and get more of a reaction, especially towards a group purchase.

Just keep posting here, or even shoot Ryan a PM and let him know we have about 10 people* right now from what I can see that are interested. He said that he plans to start designing and will post up a picture of the prototype design when he gets it. Just keep active here and I'm sure it will motivate them. UMI has spoken up and said more then BMR has so I'm sure UMI wants to get the business from us then have it be taken away by another company.

*These 10 people are just in this sub-forum alone. Who knows how many other lurkers are waiting for this dream to come true. This is just one site, there are numerous other F-Body sites out there so I'm sure this will be a worthwhile addition to the lineup!

Wouldn't these cross over for a 3rd Gen vert? I though I read that the floor pans are the same on 3rd Gens or something is the same from 3rd to 4th. I'm sure that I'm more than likely wrong, but for some reason I recall hearing this or read this, and if true, that opens up the market.

Maybe so but you're dealing with theoreticals without an actual product. I held off for 2 years waiting for the mythical Kenny Brown ones. Had I known it'd be this long my only regret is not doing it sooner, made my car much more enjoyable to drive... If you want to wait, go ahead. If another 3 years go by maybe you'll change your mind.

Hopefully, Ryan (UMI) will come through with 3-point SFC's for verts. I think he knows that this product will open the door to additional product orders. I have two verts with no suspension mods. So, I will order two sets of 3-point SFC's, two torque arms, and two sets of LCAs since I plan to do all of the suspension mods together. Otherwise, I might have ordered from BMR or found used items in the parts classifieds on this forum. I think we need to email Ryan (UMI) every week as a riminder of our interest level. Thanks for all the support!!!

Okay everyone..... here you go!

These are almost identical to our very popular 3-Point SFC's for the hardtop/T-Top models but designed to fit with the convertible bracing.

They will be available in weld in or bolt in. The bolt in model is 100% bolt in which means no holes to drill or any cutting. All hardware is included to bolt them in.

These would be available in red or black at no additional charge.

We are also going to work on a few different tunnel braces to go with these as well. I am pretty sure the factory X brace will work as well. If anyone has a picture of the factory convertible X brace post it and I can verify. My car didn't have one..

Notice on the last two pictures the extra bracing is bent to follow the contour of the vehicles floor. This means no ground clearance loss since they tuck up very tight.

I can work on a price for everyone.

Thanks!
Ryan

Yes they will. These will bolt to the vehicle first and the tunnel mounted torque arm would then bolt to the SFC's. This design allows the upward force of the torque arm to be applied into the SFC's rather than the floor of the vehicle. Here is a picture of what it would look like- http://www.umiperformance.com/catalog/images/large/2004ac_LRG.jpg

I hope to get some install pictures soon. In the meantime you can look at our hard top/t-top set up which is pretty much identical in all areas of mounting and fit- www.umiperformance.com/2004

Hello Everyone,

The retail price on this set up will be $349.99 a set.

The Group Purchase price is:

Weld In- $270.00 a set shipped.

Bolt In- $280.00 a set shipped.

I would like to get 10 buyers to offer this price, can we do it?

Please remember shipping these is not cheap. They are over-sized per UPS/Fed Ex which adds additional shipping cost. Shipping is usually an average of $30.00 per set. I am including this into the price to help you and make it easier to order and prevent any unexpected high shipping fees.

Pennsylvania residents will have to pay 6% sales tax.

This price and item is ONLY available through us direct at this time for this GP. Once the GP is over all dealers will be offering this item.

Thanks!
Ryan

EDIT: A Few things I missed-

1. Price includes shipping to US 48 States, all others will be extra and I will be happy to quote.

2. Chromoly is a $100.00 more if desired.

3. Shipping time on these is 1-1/2-2 weeks... maybe even quicker!

I am sorry to hear! I would like to get all the orders in by the end of this week so we can get these rolling. I will offer the GP pricing until Labor Day. The price after Labor day will be $349.99 a set plus shipping. If you need to cancel the order just let me know.

I have the 2-pt UMI SFCs on my 'Vert now, so can the extra pieces be welded on to make them 3-pt SFCs by a shop? Would UMI sell the additional parts? Or do I have to have them cut off and redone to get 3-pt? :bomb:

If only these were available just over a year ago...

We could sell you the six pieces of bracing and center mounts however I really don't think you will benefit much from this. The other downfall is to weld them on you will end up burning a good amount of the powder coat off the old SFC's already installed. I guess you need to get a 3rd vert to try these on :D

Thanks Ryan, I'll pay Friday :)

Excellent! Right now we are at 7 order (6 if one needs to cancel)

We are hoping to get these in by Friday if possible. With the amount of e-mails and phone calls received in the past few months we thought these would sale a little faster?

Might try posting something in the Suspension and Brakes section and see if anyone bites in there? I don't know how many of the LS1tech 'Vert people actually check this section so that section would open you up more to the general population, if you know what I mean :)

And yes people need to jump on this, myself and others didn't bug UMI on this thread, through e-mails and Facebook for nothing!

Damn it, this sucks! And I have been an avid supporter to get these done from day one! Hell I even talked to Kenny Brown to get the DD done and now I can't get on the damn GB, lol... just my luck!:eyes: :bang:

Oh well...

I'd say good luck with the GB, but we all know that would be a little redundant, lol :D

I just wanted to give everyone a quick update..

We were successfully able to get 12 buyers for the group purchase. Tubing arrived to us today to finish the bracing and the building has begun.

If you placed an order online your account has been updated and it will be marked as shipped once they leave our facility. If you used Paypal or phoned in the order a tracking # will be e-mailed when it ships. All SFC's will be shipped Fed Ex.

We are looking at end of next week for shipping but I will keep you updated.

If anyone is still interested I will offer the price until we get everyone's order shipped out.

Thanks again to everyone that participated!

I have a ditch I can back over off my driveway and should give me room to install without having to put the car on stands. No problem! And for anyone who is worried that they might show "too" much, you honestly have to step back a good 15-20 feet and kneel down to see them. They do tuck very well and I'm very impressed with how much tighter the car feels. I honestly think that all I need to do is lower the car about an inch and it will look and handle just perfect!

Same here, got about an hour in putting em on and STILL haven't gotten the middle bolts in (got a DS loop also, so its not helping). Car hasn't been wrecked, I'm no beginner by far, and I haven't even started the other side. Hope it goes better than this one, gonna pull my hair out. Otherwise, they look great. Curious to see the difference between the 2 point and 3 point. I also have a 6pt bar in it so it might not be as much as most of you guys.

I didn't really have any bug issues putting mine on, the instructions were pretty much spot on (except my bolts were 19mm instead of 18mm per instructions :D) and I did it in the driveway on ramps, stands and a jack. I'd have to say bolting the front was a tad bit difficult but that was just because I had to try and get the bolt to catch on to the plate. Install took me about an hour and a half but I was taking my time.

mrkcogar
10-16-2011, 05:47 PM
To get the front I used another jack to hold up the SFC. Then I used a pen magnet, through the frame, to hold the plate still while I threaded one bolt. Tightened that one bolt all the way down to hold the plate still while I threaded the other one. Last, I loosened the other bolt till I was ready to tighten everything up together.

UMI Performance
10-16-2011, 08:09 PM
Here is how I recommend installing them:

Install the rear control arm mount bolt first, but do not tighten it.

Swing the SFC up and install the two front bolts, do not tighten these bolts, let them loose.

Now install the center bolts, there should be a little movement in the SFC if needed to line a hole up.

Repeat on other side.

Once all bolts are installed load the chassis before tightening all bolts.

I hope that helps!
Ryan

mrkcogar
10-16-2011, 11:30 PM
That's how I did it, rear first. I then used the jack just to basically hold up SFC while I tried to align the nut plate in the frame with SFC and install the bolts. With mine it was hard to push the SFC all the way flush while trying to align everything an keep that plate still. The pen magnet helped to keep the nut plate from moving. Jack kept it all in place. Thanks again for the awesome product.

Got my SFC installed today. All was nice and I did it exactly as the instructions said, except the 18mm bolt was actually 19mm, but that was stated earlier. Only issue was the center points did not line up with the nuts where the tunnel brace goes. Had pry the driver's side sfc forward a little to get the bolt holes to line up. On the passenger side I had to grind the holes bigger roughly a 1/4" more to get the bolt to thread in. Still plenty of metal left around the bolts. Still love them and they look great even make the car feel stiffer with me having a 4pt roll bar in the car already. Thanks again UMI

Install went really smooth, and these tuck up extremely tight. Took me about an hour from start to finish.

On the front, a simple trick is to use the old bolts from the control arm to hold the bar nut into place, see attached pic. On the passenger side, the middle mount was about 1/8" off, nothing that a little work with a big c-clamp couldn't fix.

Took the car for a drive today, is a night and day difference. Over small bumps in the road, the car is much tighter, feels solid now. My car is lowered, so the only way anybody is going to see these is if they get down and look under the car.

Great product, UMI. Thanks for putting these together!

What I did for torque on the bolts was 50lbs for the front, 30lbs for the center, and I believe the instructions said 72lbs for the rear. I believe also the instructions said the torque arm relocation bracket goes below the center mounting point of the SFC's...meaning the center plate on the SFC is touching the underside of the car. Hope that helps and good luck with the install.

Put mine on last week and they made a great difference. Took me about 2 hours to get them put on, but that was with the hassel of trying to get the car off of the ground (took about an hour). I definitely think they were one of the best mods suspension wise for a convertible.

Per UMI, torque the control arm bolts to 72 ft lbs. If they make any noise, re-torque them to 90-100 ft lbs.

On the center mount, the plate of your SFC should be touching the car.

Install instructions attached.

Thanks for the info on the installation time Tyler. I was hesitating to open the big box sitting in my garage from UMI, thinking that it would be an all day job... If these firm the car as much as the SLP strut rod, the car should be quite a bit tighter. :thumb:

The car is way tighter. It is incredible. I was taking turns at speeds that I never would have tried before I installed them. It came to the point where my seats didn't offer enough support to hold me while going around some of the turns. It may be time to buy some recaros.

I'll say my car was stiffer for the drive home after getting the SFC's installed. Took some curves faster then normal and didn't feel body roll...just my seat's lumbar support not holding me as good as before.
