i'm going to take a wild guess.......a rubber tube with a breather on the end.

WHAT DO I WIN???????

nah, i'm guessing someone removed the AIR pump......if so, that tube is blowing raw exhaust right into your engine bay.......does the car smell like exhaust when your AC/heater fan is on while idling at a stoplight?

What year is your car? on the 00-02's the stock lid has a tube attached to it, so when people install aftermarket lids that don't have the hole they just put the breather filter on the end of the tube, which is what has been done to your car.

Its definitely not exhaust gas blowing through there because it would probable melt the filter or hose.

Look at the OP's car in the link, that is the "correct" lid for your car, although the way yours is setup will work fine. That is why if you go to any of the sponsors you will usually see lids for "98-99" cars and "00-02" cars

the filter maybe, but the same kind of hose is hooked to the AIR tubes that run to the small metal pipes connected to both headers...
mine's a 98 so i never even knew about that extra lid tube on 00-02's.

That's the end of the AIR system tube that plugs into the stock air filter box. Since you have a lid mod that doesn't allow for attachment, a small breather filter was put in its place.
