Drag Racing Tech - New LSX MOZEZ Nitrous Combo Pictures!

It has been a very very long winter, with many race car projects. After my rough season last year with issues beyond my control, I ended up selling the previous engine combo..... I started on this project back in October of last year, but it has taken some time to get it all done. We had the Mozez canted valve heads in short order, but the Marcella intake and custom camshaft kinda killed my original project time line. But, its finally done and bolted in the car. Everything has been designed and ordered around an ALL OUT nitrous combo, and I will be finding out very soon how things work on nitrous. I also sent the car to Larry Larson of Larson Race Cars to get a bunch of chassis work done. Larry did alot of work in the engine bay and throughout the car. I will post up pictures later of the rest of his work, including the custom pro-stock style wing, cage bars, sheet metal work etc.

As for an update on last year, the car did go 8.47 @ 164 with a mild 200HP tuneup with the C5R engine. This one should do slightly better :)

A few quick details and then on to the pictures:

- LSX block, 432 ci, solid deck
- Custom Diamond Pistons with a killer ring pack to handle whatever I can throw at it
- GRP Aluminum rods
- Callies Magnum Crankshaft
- ARE 4 Stage Drysump (carry over from old combo)
- Jesel .904 dog bone lifters
- Bullet Custom billet cam
- Mast Motorsports/Cary Chouinard MOZEZ Canted valve heads, titanium valves, locks, retainers etc.
- Trend Custom 1/2" pushrods, with some Pro-stock tricks
- Jesel Shaft rockers
- Mast Motorsports Billet valve covers
- Marcella Manifolds sheet metal tunnel ram intake with twin Wilson 2000 cfm TB's
- Nitrous Outlet 2 stage Dry Nitrous setup
- Testing Bigstuff 3's new dry nitrous control for the COP style engine.

A big thanks goes out to:

Don Baxter for the meticulous engine assembly, and new transmission build..
Cary Chouinard for badass heads/valvetrain/valve covers
John Marcella for the Awesome intake combo
David Vasser, owner of Nitrous Outlet, for the 2 stage Nitrous system and flowing service with 6 different tuneups!
Brian Thompson of Thomson Automotive for the meticulous machine work on the block etc.
Larry Larson of Larson Race Cars for getting the car done and out the door in the time shedule I had, along with unbelievable fab work!

Enjoy some engine porn!!!

Its got a Midwest Chassis Fab 9 and front spindle mount K-member setup, but Larson did the rest.

I've got a long list of things that Larry Larson did to the car, and the best part from start to finish he took only 2.5 weeks. Absolutely incredible work, and a quick turn around. Larry and his crew are masters at what they do, and it shows. I will post a few pictures of the engine bay prior to paint to give you an idea on the quality of the welds.

Well worth the 400 mile drive one way

Im not one to post numbers as they are just used as a tuning tool...nothing more and nothing less. The only number that counts in my eyes is what it runs at the track.

So I will be making some 330' hits tonight to see if I can get the radials to work and to try and get a handle on the initial 1 stage dry tuneup.

Exactly  Chasing records is nice, but being consistant and fast is a whole nother thing.

I went testing both days a week ago at 2 different tracks. These radials are very difficult to get figured out at first. I'm getting the hang of it though, as on my 3rd pass I went a 1.29 60'. I knew my 4.30 gear was gonna hurt me on the radials, but I wanted to try it first. I am swapping to a 3.89 gear tomorrow, and that should allow me to put a little more timing in the motor off the line. It was extremely lazy for the first 2.2 seconds into the run as I was killing the timing to get it to leave and then ramping it back in.

We made some headway for sure, and will be going back out this coming weekend again.

As for jetting, I am testing right now on a single stage tuneup with a 28 jet. If all goes well in testing this weekend, I may try turning on the 2nd kit with another 26 or 28 jet.

I do want to thank Justin Smith and Madman for being on my speed dial while at the track, and for their assistance with this combo. Justin may be a competitor, but his willingness to help with getting me started on this dry nitrous combo has helped alot. NOw I just gotta get this thing completely down the track and run some decent numbers :chug:

Nice meeting you guys at Byron on Saturday. Quite an interesting day.....more like frustrating day with the Hoosier radials. I can't believe how timing sensitive they are on the starting line. I was able to get down the track in the morning when the track was fresh, but as the track warmed up it also got very greasy. Out of 8 "attempted" passes, I was able to make it down 2 of those 8. But due to my timer issue, I wasted 3 runs trying to figure that out. But atleast I now have a tuneup to launch on a gravel road :D

I did finally figure out my timer issue on both kits as I was told wrong on how the dry nitrous timers work :bang: Its no wonder it spun off the line when both kits were on at .2 seconds out....LOL

I am going back again this coming saturday and sunday to test with a a group of local Top Sportsman racers.....which hopefully will give me a better track.

What was the deal with the timers? Do they start from a different point?

SMKN TA 95

What was the deal with the timers? Do they start from a different point?

There are 4 timers for the NOS parameters setion of the BS3.

Stage 1-2
Stage 2-3
Stage 3-4
Stage 4-5

Well first off, BS3 will only control 4 stages of nitrous, so where the stage 4-5 comes in is beyond me. I was told by a few BS3 dry users that the Stage 1-2 is for activation of Stage 1 nitrous, and the Stage 2-3 is for activation of Stage 2 nitrous.

For timer Stage 1-2 I had 0.1 sec in for activation of stage one, and 1.2 sec for activation of Stage 2. At first I thought it was the track or I was overpowering the tires on the starting line, but come to find out it was turning on Stage 2 0.1 seconds out. At the time I didn't even think about it until my ride home when I was talking with Justin Smith about how the timers work. When I got home and checked the log, it shows that the first stage comes on immediately after the transbrake release, and the second stage was coming on via the 0.1 sec. I assumed there was a timer to delay stage one, but there isn't.

It wasn't that big of a deal, but now that I know exactly how it works I'm not so frustrated :D The combination of this and trying to make the radials work made for an interesting day at the track

Nope, BS3 controls everything (timing, fuel, etc) I am still using the individual coils and BS3's 24X trigger wheel setup on the front of the balancer.

Do you have a data logger in the car?

Yes, the BS3 records/logs everything. Ive got all of the internal sensors logged along with everything that I can externally (driveshaft speed, nitrous pressure, fuel pressure, oil etc etc)

Phil, that would be interesting to find out :)

I think Chris got a video, but he was having problems all day so it was an aborted pass. Just after that pic of it in the air was taken it spun the tires and he got out of it.

I wonder if the 275s would 60' better due to less weight....

I've been told recently that the 295's are harder to make work than the 275's, but I haven't tested on my 275's yet. I also have only tested on one stage right now, so the car won't leave like I want until I turn on both kits.

After some ohone calls today and alot of time analyzing the logs, I've figured out why I keep hitting the tires too hard with regards to the timing retard. I'm going to make some changes and hit it with both kits this weekend.

Sean-

Thanks for the pictures, they look fantastic :D And yes, I am planning on being at Byron by 8am on saturday to get good spot due to the Top Sportsman race.

I am confident in their advice too. I know the radials will work out great once I figure out the correct timing retard/ramp off the starting line to get this thing to leave the way I want.

Very nice. That is a lot to tame. It would take me forever to get that right lol.

Bring it to Indy for the next Friday night Rage event. The track was killer last Friday. So was Muncie IN on Saturday.

I never said they were easy, IMO they are a pain in the a$$. :bang:

Its a fine line to walk to make a radial to work, anyone who runs them will agree to that.

Once you get the gearing and converter right its not that bad.

Getting the converter right is the hard part IMO ... we still have alot to do in that dept.

How many hits do you have on the tight converter?

How many hits do you have on the tight converter?

None.... LOL !

The tightest one we had last year (chance) we put in right before Ducks race in Oct. ran it there and at World cup... so 10 passes maybe.

Sent it back over the winter... tightened up 1,000+ rpm :judge:

Your right, the torque converter will make or break a combination.

Mine will only go to about 4000 standing on the brake, and flashes to around 5500-6000 depending on how much timing I have in it. Using my timing ramp, I make the flash softer or more gradual or come on hard..

This past weekend I went to Byron on saturday to do some more 1/8 mile testing with the car on a good track. The top sportsman guys were there, so I was able to finally put some power down. I ended up leaving the trailer/truck/car at the track on saturday night and came back and tested again on sunday.

Well I am finally getting the hang of the tires and combination now. I analyzed all of my data this past week, ALONG WITH and the time paid off. I came up with a timing ramp that is working pretty killer so far. I made it down the track 6 out of 8 times this weekend, so its came a long way. I also am extremely safe on the tuneup In regards to the timing on these 2 stages. I will be able to put more power down low eventually, but the starting line wasn't there on sunday to be able to do what I wanted.

On both stages my best pass of the weekend was 8.05 @ 174 mph, with a 5.21 @ 139 to the 1/8th with a 1.30 60'. All runs were made at a 3270 lb race weight. The torque converter has 3-4% slippage on the big end, so it seems to be working REALLY well :D

On my last pass of the day, I had tire shake when the second stage turned on so I pedaled it real quick and ran it out the back door to a 8.23 @ 174. On this pass I had even more timing in it and it seemed to really like it. Once I get my 60's down into the mid to low 1.20's, it should run where I want it to.

Overall I am very happy with how it ran for the first time making it down the track on radials, and running out the back door for the first time this year.

I also want to thank Justin Smith for his help on the dry nitrous combination. If it wasn't for his assistance, I wouldn't be anywhere near this point....this fast. He has also given me some pointers on other aspects of the car and radials, and his experience is second to one. I can't wait to get back out and try out some new things we talked about this week.

Also want to thank Madman for the chassis advice so far, along with getting a baseline with the suspension and going from there. We are making headway, and hopefully we can get some better 60's next time I run the car.

Make sure to click HD or change to 720 or 1080p as it was uploaded ats a 1080p video. The 8.05 pass wasnt uploaded as we had some operator error on that one....like blue sky :bang:

Yes, I will be pulling the chute from now on. Just a little nervous from a prior experience.

Yeah, I heard from lots of people that the announcer made sure to talk about the car for some reason whenever I ran...
