Default Timing Cover

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the timing cover back on without having to drop the oil pan (since that sounds like a huge pain in the ***)?

Don't half *** it!!! Drop the front of the pan a bit as you will likely tear the front of the pan seal if you try and force it in there. Ask me how I know - LOL. Just loosen the pan all the way around - don't have to pull it off - and give yourself some room.

You don't. The pan goes on after the timing cover. That's how it is made. Lower the front of the pan as noted above.
