oil leak

oil leak i washed the engine up to help locate a leak. i appears to be coming from the side of the block(passenger and driver) near the very front. what could this possibly be? if i had a blown head or head gasket would it leak onto the block or only internally?

Oil does not transfer via head gasket. It could come from many places- Valve covers, front of intake, any of the front seals, timing cover gasket or oil pan gasket. Start looking from the top and work your way down. My bet it it's coming from the front of the intake. If it's coming from a seal you would see oil slung over places where oil could not naturally reach.
