Default starter solenoid replacement DIY???

i just took a used starter to advance and it spun fine and passed all the tests except the engagement where it actually kicks the gear down, that would be the solenoid? or the plunger bad?ive heard that the solenoid could cost as much as another starter? this is an ls1 fbody unit but i also have a 4.3 starter that looks identical except for bolt mounting pattern,i may just take both to an alt/starter repair shop and see what they can do between both for parts, any ideas? it looks like the solenoid can be removed by itself with 3 torque type bolts
