Have $800, what mods to add?
So I just purchased my 2nd LS1 (1st was a H/C/bolton 6speed Z28, but I had to sell that car due to the birth of my son), and have done some maintenance to it and am now ready to throw some cash at mods. My current car is a 1998 Z28 auto w 3.23 gears that is 100% stock. What I've done so far includes:
- all fluids and filters changed (oil/trans/rear/brake/coolant/ps)
- new NGK plugs (TR55s) and MSD wires
- B&M trans cooler
- comp rocker arm trunion bearing upgrade
- LS6 valve springs and new valve seals
- racetronix fuel pump/hotwire/ground cable upgrade
The car runs great with no issues. I'm gonna get it dyno tuned soon, but want to wait til I throw some mods at it. I have around $800, and was wondering what you guys think I should spend the $$ on. The options I think I have are as follows:
- used LS6 intake manifold ($350)
- sale on coated Pacesetter LTs and ypipe ($515... includes gaskets)
- ported and polished stock TB ($80)
- SLP airlid ($95)
- 4.10 gears and install kit ($305)
- 3200 stall converter ($500)
There's a guy at my work who just bought a 02' Z06 and added a Corsa catback. Paid way to much for it (in my opinion) and I'd like to beat him in a highway race (we drive along a desolate stretch of road on the way home from work) with my budget Z28. What I'm thinking is that a combo of any of the above mods with my $800 budget, it just isn't possible... however, it is if I buy a nitrous kit (+ bottle warmer) and run him that way.
So my question is this: do I purchase the nitrous kit? Or would buying a combination of some of the above mods (limited to $800 give or take) make my car more than enough for him to handle on the highway? BTW, I have a set of 17" DRs mounted on GS replica rims that will be on the car.
Thanks in advance

It would take all those mods to give you a chance and probably still get pulled pretty good.
You want to beat him...
Brand x wet kit
Pressure gauge
Window switch
Fuel pump
Tune
Spray it with a 150 hit and walk him very hard.
If you dont do that, do a converter...3600, don't waste with a 3200. I recommend PTC.

I don't know if any of those mods will give you the power to beat a ZO6. You may be able to hang with him pretty well with NOS tho because LS motors love nitrous! But be very very careful and make sure a pro does it for you. Wet shot is defiantly the safest but Ive seen many motor explode from improper No2 application...

nitrous
after a lid, that was my first mod and i was pretty happy with it.
i would say go with a decent stall (not sure you can get one for $500), but that won't do it for you if you're looking to beat a c5 z06 on the highway.

Yeah, beating a catback only C5 Z06 on the highway is a pretty lofty goal for a stock LS1/auto Z28... I know.
Figured the only way to come close with my budget would be a nice shot of spray... BTW, I already have the racetronix fuel pump, hotwire, and ground strap upgrade in place. The tune will come AFTER I decide and install what mods I want... and it looks like a wet shot is going to be my choice. The most I want to push it is a 125 shot tho, guess I'll hope the guy in the Z06 is not a good driver.
Time to call up HSW and set up one of their kits...

As everyone else has said nitrous will give you the best chance of keeping up with the vette. You can also do nitrous yourself, its simple to install nitrous, just make sure you get all the right stuff and do it right and don't halfass install it without any safety items. Do some research on it and don't be an idiot and you will be fine.

I personally wouldn't run nitrous on the stock 4L60E unless you plan on rebuilding it. My brother got about 4 bottles worth of 1/4 mile passes and having fun before the stock 4L60E gave out and he used a 100 shot 80% of the time. I think for $800(assuming you did it yourself), you could have a 3600 stall converter and transmission cooler, then you'd likely need to fork over some more cash to have your transmission tuned in order to properly use the converter.

Tony, just go with what I told you on the phone damn it lol.
Bolt-ons, cam with possibly stall, then bottle it up. But we never even got into other things like SFCs, LCAs etc. I'll be back in town hopefully late summer to help ya out bro.
That combo with destroy just about any minor bolton C5 Z06 easily without even trying. You'd be talking easy 11's and 120ish trap which would be working its way into C6 Z06 territory.
Plus you have my ET Streets, so you should be able to take him hard to about 60-70mph before he would start to run you down on the steet as long as you hit it hard.

Mike,
Unfortunately I only have enough cash for one of those listed combos... 1) boltons, 2) cam, or 3) nitrous.
Nitrous, hands down, will give me the power I need to take out the guy at my work with the C5 Z06. None of the other options by themselves will be able to accomplish this task.
However, with the higher milage of my car (167k) I dont know if this is the best option. Of course, I dont know if I want to jump right into the spray just yet. Decisions, decisions.
What it all boils down to is I have some deciding to do and some serious thinking ahead of me. Beating the C5Z isn't all that immportant, but at the same time, I'd like to beat my own personal record of 12.24... and I don't know if a few boltons is going to accomplish that task...
