Default New 98 z28 problems

Hi all, just got my 98 z28 ls1 today and I love it. Has a few problems though i might be in the right place to ask about them. (First and most importantly): This thing shifts really hard (m6) i mean I can hardly get it into 2nd from 1st. Also sometimes when i try to put it into first it grinds and i have to wait a few seconds before I can get it into gear. (second) The ASR isn't responding to the button. Is there any way to fix it or get the traction control off?

Its really late so sorry if there's typos,

Thanks to who ever responds

Alright I have some good news and some bad news. First being a new owner of the car I didn't see the little light in corner that said "skip shift". so now i figure if im on the accelarator it will allow me to hit second. Bad news, drove down to advanced auto and the tranny started to whine really loud, I felt down the shifter and felt it was quite hot, i got some tranny fluid (dex 3) and I hope its not too late for those bearings.
also it only whines when im accelerating, let off and it stops... hmm
still lovin it though!

Yea sounds like the tranny is in bad shape put some new fluid in it and see what happens...if the gears still grind and whine like that you might want to look into getting it rebuilt.....

Got the car on the ramps to check fluid. It was full and bright red. Also i popped the rear diff cover off to check for shavings and its nothing beyond what i would expect. guess ill wait and see in the new fluid i put in the diff does anything.

also does having the car backed on to ramps affect the tranny fluid level?

Does your clutch feel good? It could maybe be that you need to bleed your clutch, it may not be fully disengaging???? Just a maybe. Probably your 1/2 synchro. I also believe the car need to be level when checking trans fluid level.

1/2 synchro assy.is around 130 bucks i think, if you've got some mechanical ability, and a few tools you could fix it yourself. I just got done replacing 2nd gear in mine.

+1 for checking the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder first. Much easier repair. But with the whine you were mentioning I fear the worst.

Just took it for a drive after replacing the gear oil. Alot less vibration and its smoother shifting, but the tranny still whines. my dad said its normal for a manual. I guess i could try squeezing under to check the tranny again.
:edit: the clutch pedal has 3 inches play in it. How would one go about bleeding a clutch?
Thanks for the help guys!

I have a six speed in my ls1 and the tranny makes no noise whatsoever if your hearing a really loud whining noise that is noticeable then there is a problem
