Picked up a CE that is believed to be the 3rd Pace Car alot of guys have been talking about over at Collectorfbody.com Anyone know anything about this car?? Last 5 of the vin is 00004.
I cant find out how to register over at there site.
I know it was a GM Executive car then sold at a dealer only sale. A Chevy dealer bought the car and then sold to the guy we bought the car from. Previous owner had the car since 2005. Really dont think he knew what he had.
Any help getting this car documented would be awesome!!

I can tell you that the last six of the VIN on CE #2 are 100006. That car was converted by ASC on February 28, 2001 and is a M6/T-Top car. It is also the first M6/T-Top built.
So for your car to be the third Pace car is unlikely. Click the link in my sig and PM me your info.

Interesting because this car is a M6/TTop. I know it came from the factory like this I did call GM Tech line and they had a Invoice and told me all the options for the car. Usually though the guy told me it shows where the car was shipped, this invoice did not. It just showed the shipping company used. It was a GM Executive car so that could explain that though.
Last six is 100004

If CE #2 ends in 100006 and this one ends in 100004, maybe it is CE #1?
Not sure what "3rd pace car" really means. Does that mean it was the 2nd back up pace car at the Daytona 500 in 2002? Even if that is true, that doesn't mean that the 2nd backup car was NOT the 1st actual CE built.

I don't know if the VIN # has much to do with the order. They could have been building them at the same time and simply finished the other one before this one or vice-versa.

You have a point, ASC conversion sequence isn't always the same as the VIN sequence. However, I always thought that the VIN sequence reflected the order in which the cars rolled down the assembly line. I believe there was only one line at St. Therese (I could be wrong on this). In any case, assuming the VIN sequence reflects the assembly sequence on the GM line and ASC didn't adhere to VIN sequence when converting cars, which car would be considered the "1st CETA Built"?? The one with the lower VIN sequence # or the one with the lower ASC#??

I have ran into this with info I have been getting for members.
Take these two cars for example
1999 - White - WS6 - T-Top - 200084: This car was converted on 10/26/1998 and is ASC # 541
1999 - Black - WS6 Formula Hardtop - Auto - 200135: This car was converted on 8/18/1998 and is ASC # 10
The Black has a later VIN but was converted by ASC two months earlier than the White car. I have yet to call and talk with him to see why this happened. This is also the case with some '00, '01 and '02 cars but I haven't had this happen with the CE's.

From what I have been told, this is the first CE T/A built. As for the 3rd Pace Car I have been told there were 2 cars track ready, with strobes, and one car that had stickers as a 3rd back up. The stickers are faded like everyone says the Pace Car stickers did. The feathers are larger than normal CE's I have seen also.

Unless the Pace Car stripes are different(which I highly doubt they are), the stripes on that car are not correct.

They were different. They were larger and outlined different. (At least from what I have been reading)

Back in 2002 whe I was doing my research on the pace car I went through the GM ladders and finally got to Curt Collins the Brand Manager for the Firebird. Curt told me the name of the company GM contracted with to supply the feather stripes and door decals. (I think I have the company info somewhere at home). Anyway I did contact the supplier from Florida back in 2002 and they said the actual pace car stripes and hood decals were enlarged 15% over the stock decals. They said the couldn't make any additional decals with out GM's approval and Daytona's approval for the door decal. I called Curt back and asked if GM would approve the production of the lager decals. He said "give me a few day and I'll discuss it internally." Curt called me back and said they talked it over and decided not to authorize it. So that was the end of the line in my quest for getting Pontiac to support the pace car replication.

This is interesting.
I've got some pictures of the cars at Daytona in '02 but they are all of the parade cars which appear to have the production stripes. I'll try to call my guy at ASC tomorrow and see what info he has on your car.
jrinehart81
06-29-2011, 12:39 PM
Cool man thanks. That is correct on the Parade Cars, they had normal decals. I copy and pasted that write up about the Pace Cars BTW.
Nice, I like those stripes better than the production run..

This is getting interesting. I wish I knew more about it, but I only know Camaros.
I don't want to confuse the issue, but I looked in my Firebird folders (not a ton of content, but some) and I believe this is one of the pace cars.

Notice how the first picture dosent have a Whelen sticker on the door and the last 2 pictures do? I would say are the 3 cars. Hopefully ours is the first picture as it does not have the Whelen decal. From what I have read 2 cars were track ready to pace and one just with the decals as a 3rd back up.

Do you know how many CEs had the Daytona decals? Because I have pics of another one, and I don't think it's one of the pace cars. I think it's just some sort of festival car.

Just because I don't want to dig it up later... the VIN on one of the cars I have pics of is 2G2FV22G922125425. It was sold at Barrett Jackson with one of those funny titles from GM's bankruptcy auction where it isn't supposed to be driven on public roads.
I don't know if it's technically one of the pace cars or not.

I would say you definitely have one of the three pace cars as they were the only ones with the enlarged stripes. Stripes were enlarged so they could be seen more easily as the car did it's pace duties. Without the Whelen decal or remnants of a stone package which was easily identified by a large white switch located in the tcs switch location, it would seem to be the backup.
Definitely a prized CETA. I'm unsure how to go about getting it documented with Pontiac being gone now, tho.
Maybe just try to get it confirmed by someone at Daytona International?

while shopping for CETAs - I learned that convertibles were used in California as parade cars. I found one at a Porsche dealer in Pennsylvania - that had "17" and "29" on the sides - assuming that was Kenseth and Harvick qualifying next to each other. As I walked up with my son and asked about it - a guy was getting ready to bring it home (there was a question of whether his wife would let him keep it). Dude was great though - he let my son (whose birthday is the 17th) sit in it and take pictures before he took it home. He kept it (maybe he's on here as a member) - I found mine in Michigan about a year later.
In 2004 - I saw one of the ones with the white circle pace car decal. Can't remember who the driver on the windshield banner was - nobody particularly noteworthy. So it seems there were several different uses for the CETAs during the season.

Z28/2002
02-07-2012, 11:34 AM
Yes it was the second pace car built, it was converted by ASC on Feb 28, 2001
Where is what I've been told from my guy, but it seems something isn't adding up
there are 3 'pace' cars built in 2001 that were the Collectors Editions. They were built in Feb. 27/ 28 of 2001 and they were VINS - 100003, 100006 & 100004. The one you asked me about before was the only manual, # 100006. Numbers #100003 is an auto-convertible and #100004 is a T-Top Auto.
