Default Biggest Cam In LQ4 For Drag Racing?

I know, I hate these "which cam?" threads too, but I searched and could not find an answer. I have a stock 6.0l lq4 going in my camaro for drag racing only, and am wondering what the biggest cam I can put in it with little or few mods (fly-cutting?). I know I need different springs, but would something like an MS4 or torquer V.3 work? If not, what would I need to do? I have a stock ls7 and tr224 cam, but I want something over .600 lift, .235 or so duration, and 110 lsa.

the Magic Stick 4 will fit in there with no problems as long as the heads remain stock. The torquer would also work because its a smaller cam. As long as a big cam is what you are looking for, this magic stick 4 will get it done.

Ok, so I won't need to fly-cut the pistons or do any other mods for an MS4-like cam? About where is the line where I would need to start modifying the piston or other parts?

you could go even bigger like T-Rex 242/248, or the Helion by flowtech

What all mods do have done to the car? I hope with choosing a cam that large you have all the supporting mods so you can really take advantage of where these cams make the most power at. The MS4 is a very nice choice though.

Yea a LS2 or LS6 intake will really not do a 240+ duration justice at 6500rpm. And neither will 3.42 gears or anything less than a 3600 stall.

I have a Pat G spec'd custom cam in my LQ4 bottom end with 62cc LS6 heads...it's 238/242, .604/.605 on a 112+4. Just FYI for reference on what will fit. You might consider a custom cam if you already have your heads so you can go as large as possible.

This is a strip-only car, so I'm gutting it, putting in a 9" ford with 4.56 gears, powerglide, probably a 4500 stall, ls1 intake (I know, I'm going to replace it probably next year when I have more money; trying to start out cheap-er), lt headers, and a few other things to set up for the strip.

If that is the case then mill the heads, have them p&p vj'd and have your pistons fly cut and put a T-rex in that bitch and run 9's. Period.

Edit added: I know that isn't budget, but if you wanted the T-rak or RapTR which is 236/242 on a 111 they wouldn't require fly cutting but with the RapTR I would check trak is 231/234 112 so you would be good with no problem there. And get at least a LS6 intake you will kill your top end with any of those three cams or any cam over a 224 duration with a LS1 intake.

9's? With basically just a cam? How much is it to get the heads milled? Is that just to raise the compression? What's p&p and vj'd?

U said the car is gutted, 4500 stall, 9 inch rear end, T rex cam has been proven to run 10.3's cam only stock heads, soooo yea with those mods I mentioned, a LS6 intake a set of 28x10.50 et drags and 15 inch prostars should get you there. Transbrake will help a lot too. I see it done every thursday granted these guys are running 6.5's-6.8's in the 1/8th with cam only cars.

P&P and VJ'd means Ported and Polished and valve job. You can have them CNC'd or just mildy ported. You can have a 3 angle or a 5 angle competition valve job. It all depends on how far you want to go. I wouldn't be able to quote a price off the top of my head, as all machine shops differ, but the top names in the business are AI(advanced inductions) and TEA for porting 243 heads. I'm sure other's will pop up with other notable porters also.

Yes, the glide has a trans brake. Will 28x10.5 slicks fit without tubbing? I'd love to have this car ready by fall. What is vj'd?

Ohh, duh. We will probably start out with a mild port job, as my dad is a mechanic, and slowly do more in the future. Thanks!

I wouldn't mill the heads to fare or you will run into p&v issues with a big cam also the more u mill the less they flow so if u want to bump up comp pick up a set of 241s or if u have the extra cash 243s they flow the same as the truck heads but have 64cc chamberd as apposed to the trucks 71cc so u will get a decent comp bump

Yeah, I'm not going to mill the heads this year. Just do a light port job at home. I don't need a 9 second car right away. Anyone have a T-rex or ms4??? lol

Also if u leave the 317s un milled and are decent at fabrication u can make a pretty cheap turbo set up out of the truck manifolds and a couple u bends

Nah, I want this to be n/a. Even though I can do a little welding, I like raw hp from the motor, lol. Maybe sometime in the future.
