Default PROJECT-"Slowly but Surely"- Input Appreciated

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum but not to the LSx scene. I have a 98 Camaro with a V6 and a 2002 Z28 that has been in an accident but was "repaired".

Long story short, I bought the Z28 because it was cheap and it runs fairly well. It has 164,xxx miles on it. I was planning to fix it up and drive it, but once i got it up on a lift, I noticed that the "repair" job wasn't all that great. So, I got to looking around for a V6 car with a blown engine and I found the 98 that I have. I'm planning to use whatever I need off of the Z28 to put a built 6.0 in the 98.

I was gonna use the LS1, but I picked up a LQ4 for free. It ran when it was pulled, it just smoked a little. My plans are for a 450-500rwhp daily driver. With the setup I've been contemplating, I should be pretty close.

Now, on to the details.

-LQ4 block, crank, and rods.
-ARP 2000 rod, main, and head bolts
-4.030 Mahle pistons with -4cc valve reliefs
-Patriot CNC ported LS6 heads (2.08/1.60 valves, 64cc, 227cc intake runners, etc)
-.040" head gasket
-LS6 intake until I can afford FAST 92/92 or 102
-Ported oil pump
-Performabuilt LV2 4L60e w/3500 stall
-3.73 gears (salvaged from Z28 until I get a new axle)
-Cam specs 235/240 .648/.609 113lsa on 111.5 centerline
-LT headers
-3" exhaust

I probably forgot a few things, but that is it for the most part. Once the car is put together, it will be getting trailered to Thunder Racing for a dyno tune.

I played with this setup on Desktop Dyno and it came out to 555hp @6500 and 530lb ft @4500. Not sure how accurate DD is, but if it's anywhere close to that at the crank when it's all buttoned up I should be really close to my goals in rwhp.

Let me know what you guys think. I'm open to any questions, comments, or concerns.

Make sure machine shop balances the rotating assembly to new pistons, I would also have the hone the rods .002 with the arp bolts since you have them out. Also I'd go with a bigger stall, but that's just me.

Sounds like a fun project. How did you manage to get a free lq4?? I'm putting one in my '95 z28. Not sure it would be the greatest DD with little traction though...

black00ssFL- I plan on balancing it, that was one of the things I forgot to mention. Why a larger stall?

tomstark- My uncle is good friends with someone that owns a towing service. He had a pickup that had an LQ4 in it, he fired it up and it ran good it just smoked a little. He pulled the engine to rebuild it, then lost interest in it. I asked him about it and he said I could have it for $300. Then a couple weeks later, after my uncle told him I am in the military, he told me to just come get it.

Other things I forgot to mention...

I'll be adding a Racetronix fuel pump and wiring upgrade. I figured up the compression ratio with the -4cc pistons and 64cc chambers with the .040 head gasket and it came out to 10.78:1

Next things to do after this is complete is rear axle upgrade and full suspension upgrade... then a paint job... but that stuff can wait...

I'll just have to baby it until I get a new axle...

Has anyone had any experience with the heads I mentioned? I've read some pretty good reviews, but haven't actually talked to anyone about them... Thunder Racing says they're pretty good...

Here's a few pics of the 98. It's a little rough, but it isn't rusted anywhere. Only paid $800 for it. Needs a front bumper cover, front right fender, interior replaced, has a dented area on the left rear quarter where it looks like something fell on it, and needs a LOT of cleaning up. Shouldn't be too hard to fix though.
