New 4L80E question
Just got my 80E rebuilt by Transformance. 6 band clutch packs, straight cut gears, billet hardened input shaft, billet hardened forward hub, basically good to an easy 750-850 rwhp.
It has Jakes "Street" Trans-brake which retains 2-1 shifting while moving and has less violent 1-2 shifting but releases the same as the "Pro" version.
My car is set-up for fmvb. My question is, I usually run only 1/8th mile and will never need to shift into 4th gear at WOT. I have heard and have been told that it isn't good for the tranny to shift into 4th at WOT or run at WOT in OD (i.e. 4th). What's the scoop on this?
I have a billet FTI lock-up converter (single disc) 3800 stall. I was wondering this because I do run on the highway against bikes and I will need 4th gear WOT to do that. Also if I plan on going to a 1/4 mile I am not sure If I can make it through the traps in 3rd gear on a 275/50/15 and 3.55's in my 1:1 gear. I do have a set of 275/60/15's (28" tall vs. 26" tall) but they are nitto 555R DR's that I could make it through the traps at 6400-6600rpm at which I would think the 26" hoosiers I have would be making me scream around 6800-6900 which scares me a lot with my stock 89k shortblock
Sorry for the looong *** post

why would the hoosiers make your rpm go up? I dont know about hoosiers, but I know ET Drags grow bringing the RPM down. Im willing to bet with your 3.55s youll be fine even on the drag radials. With my 3.90s and 26in ET Drags and TNT 175 I was crossing ruffly 6500 shifting at 6800 on the jug. Now on the street with the 3.90s and my 275/40/17s Id run outta gear at around 123 ish and be on the rev limiter. Now with 3.42s I can run it out on the street tires to over 135.

Edit Added: But, now that I think about it, I was on my street tires 305/35/18's and they are heavy (rims in pic in sig) and 3.08's really bringing my rpm's down, and slowing me down. I am going to be using my 15" race wheels soley at the track or my 17" ZR1's. I have the choice between a 275/50/15(26") or 275/60/15(28") at my disposal for them and the ZR1's have 315/35/17(26") on them. The street tires are 26.4" where as the hoosiers and nitto's are 25.8" and 27.8" respectively and the 315/35/17" mickey et street II's are 25.6". that taller street tire was bringing my rpm's down. With the 3.55's and a shorter tire it will bring the rpm's up considerably in the same spot on the track, which will have me shifting a lot earlier into 3rd in the 1/8th helping my mph out a lot. I'm gonna try to short shift 1-2 as best I can. At the 1/4 I will use the Nitto's to lower the gear ratio down some and try it out to see if I can go through the traps at a RPM I am cool with. The guy I bought them from said with LCA's, Adj. PHB, Lid, Headers, ORY and exhaust he got a 1.6x 60' on them, so I will see what I can do with them.
