Timing causing engine to run hot?!

Timing causing engine to run hot?! got a 01 5.3l in my 91 camaro and been havin some issues. i had my buddy tune out vats but he didnt mess with anything else at the moment. had another guy hook up his hptuners and saw that my timing was *14 degrees across the tables (was no change). my other buddy told me that it could be causin my car to run a little hotter cause its makin the motor work harder. is this true?
