I recommend Dex3 non-synthetic, just as it states on the sticker on the side of the trans. Synchromesh is designed to be used with mainly truck transmissions...i.e. the NVG3500. The carbon rings won't last as long with this fluid as they would with the correct fluid. Most trannys that use Synchromesh use the old-style brass rings.

I run GM's manual trans fluid p/n 88861800 which is what GM calls for in 01 + T56 applications. If its a stock 99 trans, stick with the regular dexIII

Used the Dextron. Was a challenge to fill from the fill port. But got just under four quarts in. The rest went into down my arms into the pits!

I have always been a proponent of using Dex III only, namely Mobil 1 ATF. That's what Tremec and GM reccommend for the trans.

However, I recently came accross Royal Purple Synchromax fluid, which RP states is a direct replacement for transmissions requiring ATF, unlike other brands of synchromesh fluid. I decided to give it a try, because my trans wasn't shifting all that great with the Mobil 1 ATF. It was very notchy when cold, and 2nd gear was giving me trouble.

After switching to RP Synchromax, there has been a definite improvement in the shifting and gear engagement. 2nd gear is much more agreeable, and all the other gears shift great. Goes into and out of gear easier as well. Also put it in my friends '05 GTO, and it eliminated a lot of the notchy shifting that the GTO's are known for.

Thats good to know. I think i will change from the Amsoil to the RP. Mine doesn't shift real smooth either.

I used Mobil ATF in mine up until last year (about 118k) when I had the trans rebuilt/upgraded. The builder recommend Castrol Syntorq so I am using that now (at 121k now).
